| July 1st, 2009 West Erie County, DWCO Randy Leighton, WCO Brook Tolbert Conditions: The skies opened up early Tuesday morning and the rain poured and poured and poured some more through out the day. Rainfall around the area was reported at over 5 inches for the short period. Our back yard gauge was nearly 7 inches. The Erie area along the I 90 corridor saw some of the worst flooding in years with many underpasses and low lying areas underwater. Many areas saw flooding for the first time. Pictures of vehicles with water up to the doors and impassable roadways flooded the internet. Interstate 90 was brought to a standstill and small boats hit the streets in some areas. The area tributaries were as high as I've seen in years. Walnut Creek was hit hard with the channel reaching up and nearly over the walls and jack knifing the launch ramps. Much more rain and we likely would have seen water in the parking area. The severe flooding of the area tribs has sent tremendous amounts of large debris, trees, and mud down stream and out of the mouths. It will be days as the water subsides and boaters are advised to use extreme caution to debris lying under the surface. The mud line extending into the Lake from the mouths is large and will make it difficult to see the exiting debris. Forecasts are calling for more rain. It is not unusual for such a rain event to have an adverse effect on fishing and it may be a number of days before all returns to normal. Current Lake Erie water temperature is 72 degrees. | June 23rd, 2009 West Erie County, DWCO Randy Leighton, WCO Brook Tolbert Conditions: Walleye season on Lake Erie has been off to a slow start in our area mainly due to a long cold spring and lower than usual water temperatures. Summer is finally here, (officially anyway) and things are starting to pick up. Similar to most years, the early season walleye are being found closer to shore. Thirty feet of water and down as shallow as 20 feet of water along the lake shore has been somewhat productive. With temperatures in the mid 60s, anglers should see more activity. Perch fishing is picking up and finding them hasn’t been as difficult. Many limits are being reported. Due North of Walnut creek in 40 to 45 feet of water, north of Trout Run, and off the point at Presque Isle have been productive. Bass fishing is still good in 25 to 35 feet of water all along the lake shore. Current Lake Erie water temperature off Toledo is 69 degrees, of Cleveland, 64 degrees and off the Port of Erie, 64 degrees. |

| June 17th, 2009 West Erie County, DWCO Randy Leighton, WCO Brook Tolbert Conditions: Reports for Walleye and Perch have varied greatly over the last few weeks. Locating fish can be difficult, but it is important to note that the Lake temperatures are still relatively cold and the fishing should pick up as water temperatures hit the mid sixties. For now, the best reports for perch have been in 40-42 feet of water north of Trout Run and off the Point at Presque Isle in similar depths. A fair number of perch limits have been reported with many of good size. Again, a good rule of thumb when perching, is to change locations if you haven't had a strike in 15 or 20 minutes. Walleye angling has been sporadic with the large numbers of migrating walleye still mostly in the East Basin of Lake Erie. Reports from the Islands in the Eastern Basin have been excellent with water temperatures there in the mid 60's. Savvy anglers in our area have brought in limits, many of them targeting the shallow areas west of Walnut Creek in 30 to 35' of water. Bass fishing remains good to excellent along the Lake Shore in 25-30 feet of water, especially in any area where there is any kind of structure. Current Lake Erie water temperatures are 66 degrees off Toledo, 62 degrees off Cleveland, and 57 degrees off the Port of Erie. |

| PERCH: Eight year old Anthony Morrison of West Mifflin, PA, brought in a nice Angler Award sized Perch. It was 1 lb. 2 oz. and was 14 inches long with a girth of 9 ¾ inches. He caught it out in 45 ft of water straight out of Walnut Creek on an Emerald shiner. The fishing has been almost non- existent. The Perch when they can be found seem to be out in 35-40 ft of water off Trout Run. The ones being caught are said to be full of minnows, so they are getting all the food they need out in the water. The new traffic pattern so far is going okay. The only problem is getting used to it. Change can be hard but give it time. Please just watch the signs and it will be easy. Utilize the “Tie Down Area”. We do ask that you not pull up in front of the net shed because the vehicles have to pull all the way up to the building to launch or retrieve their boats. This will cause traffic problems. |

| June 3rd, 2009 West Erie County, DWCO Randy Leighton, WCO Brook Tolbert Conditions: Wind and wave conditions have been on the rough side the past few days often confining weekend anglers to Presque Isle Bay. Bass fishing continues to be fair to good in the bay. Anglers looking for those early season perch schools are still looking. Perch catches have been sporadic, but are picking up. Night time walleye fishing along the shoreline near the tributary mouths has actually been pretty good this year, when the Lake conditions cooperate. Anglers have had some early season walleye success in 25 to 35 feet of water West of Walnut Creek and over as far as the Ohio line. Current Lake Erie water temperature off Toledo is 62 degrees, off Cleveland, 58 degrees and off the Port of Erie, 59 degrees. Regular Bass Season Opens Saturday June 13th: Regular Bass season for the opens Saturday, June 13th. Limits for Lake Erie and it's tributaries are 4 fish (combined species small and large mouth) with a 15" minimum length. Inland waters other than Lake Erie and its tributaries the limit is 6 fish with a 12" minimum length. A Few Bass Techniques: |

| PERCH: This week we have a smorgasbord of fish. First, we have eleven year old Lucas Stellabotte from Lower Burrell with his Perch. It was 12 ¾ ounces, 12 ¼ inches long and had a girth of 8 ¼ inches. He caught it out in 54 ft of water off Walnut Creek on Emerald Shiner. CHANNEL CATFISH: Next we have seven year old Ronnie Rusch who brought in a huge Channel Catfish. It was 15 lbs 11 oz. and was 30 inches long with a girth of 19 ½ inches. He caught it out in 28 ft of water East of Walnut Creek on Emerald Shiner. SMALLMOUTH BASS: Then we have fifteen year old Matthew West of Erie, PA with a nice Small Mouth Bass. It was 4 lbs. ½ oz., 20 inches long and had a girth of 15 inches. He caught her in Walnut Creek on a Grub. She still had some eggs in her too. WALLEYE: And last but not least is Raymond Haskins from Mars, PA with his nice catch. He was out on “Sea Wolf Charters”. His fish was 10 lbs. ½ oz. and was 31 inches long with a girth of 18 inches. He caught it out in 15 ft of water West of Walnut Creek on a Golden Shiner. |

| May 27th, 2009 West Erie County, DWCO Randy Leighton, WCO Brook Tolbert Conditions: Boaters on the Lake and Presque Isle Bay found fairly good wind and wave conditions on Saturday and Sunday with the Monday giving way to rough and windy waters. Perch fishing is picking up in 30 to 40 feet of water off of Trout Run with a few limits of nice size fish brought in. Similar scenarios have been reported from the east side of town off the cribs in Harborcreek. As the Lake temperatures begin to break the 60 degree mark, we should start to see the perch starting to school and the walleye moving in. Patrols in West Erie County on Monday found a fair number of angers fishing the tribs for smallmouth bass and suckers with a fair amount of success. Although the tribs are very low right now, the deeper pools often hold schools of bass, catfish, and plenty of suckers. Current Lake Erie water temperatures are 62 degrees off Toledo, 55 degrees off Cleveland, and 56 degrees off the Port of Erie. Walnut Creek Access: As we have mentioned in the past few weeks, boaters coming into the Walnut Creek Access Area are finding things dramatically different. In a nut shell, when entering the access area at the large stop sign, all boats are to proceed straight instead of making the previous right hand turn. At the stop sign boaters are given instructions and it becomes a simple matter of following the posted signs. The system is designed to make the boat trailer traffic travel in one large, consistent loop and to not block automobile traffic entering the area to access the marina. Be advised there are a number of added stop signs in the appropriate areas of the pattern, all of which must be obeyed to keep the system safe for everyone. Additional parking has been added next to the east lot where the old boat barn was. As we go through the simple learning curve of the new pattern, your patience and consideration will be appreciated. We have seen a few mistakes and there will be more...old habits are hard to break, however, careful thought was put into the system in an effort to keep traffic flow moving. I have attached two identical diagrams of the new system to this weeks report. The first is a standard PDF file and the second is a TIF file that you should be able zoom in on for further detail. Both have been scanned for viruses Another Fish For Free Day: |

| WALLEYE: Here is Morris Mitchell (Mickey) of Saegertown with this nice sized Walleye. First one brought in to me for weighing. It was 9 pounds 12 ¾ ounces, 30 inches long and had a girth of 19 inches. He caught it out in around 27 ft of water off Trout Run on a Hot & Tot. SMALL MOUTH BASS: Eleven year old Joshua McQuiston of Pittsburgh came in with a nice Small Mouth Bass. It was 5 pounds 12 ounces, 21 inches long and had a girth of 16 ¼ inches. He caught it out in 18-20 ft of water off Trout Run on an Emerald shiner.
I have no pictures of the Perch but they are talking about getting them in 40 ft of water off Trout Run and in 55 ft of water straight out of Walnut Creek. WALNUT CREEK ACCESS TRAFFIC FLOW: Here is a diagram of the new traffic flow at Walnut Creek. Just remember to watch the signs. There are a lot of them and they explain to you where to go and in which direction. Please Stop at all the "Stop" signs. There are signs under them to tell you which way to go. Please follow the arrows that are painted in the parking lot also. If everyone is parked the same way there should be less damage done to the trailers in the lot hopefully. There is a big change so please watch and drive carefully. The launch and exits are reversed from what they used to be. Also, watch the launch ramp signs. They are there to show you which ramp is open to launch and which ramp is open for coming in off the water. If you can see "Open" when you launch then it is open to launch. If it says "Open" when you come in off the water, then use that one. One side of the sign says "Open" and the other side of the sign says "Closed". Have a Happy Memorial Day Weekend. |

| May 20th, 2009 West Erie County, DWCO Randy Leighton, WCO Brook Tolbert Conditions: Bass are pretty much the word right now. Fish over 20" are not uncommon and large girths are the norm. (Current season limits Bass to one fish with a minimum length of 20" on Lake Erie and its tribs.) Hot spots are off of Godfrey Run and Crooked Creek in 20-25' of water. Rattle traps, tube jigs, Hot n Tots, Carolina Rigs and live shiners are all good choices for bait. Generally, baits should be fished deep with jigs being bounced off the bottom. Many anglers troll until they find a school and then settle in to the still fishing. Some perch are being caught but not in any big numbers yet. Anglers are still searching for the large schools that form off of Walnut Creek. The Lake temperatures are still only in the mid fifties . No large catches of Walleye have been reported and those that have been caught have generally been resident fish near shore. Another 10 degrees in water temperature should get the Eastern migration moving our way. Current Lake Erie water temperatures off Toledo are 57 degrees, off Cleveland 53 degrees, and off the port of Erie, 54 degrees. Walnut Creek Access Area: The new traffic pattern construction is in the downhill phase and boaters using the area this weekend should be running into the new, enhanced traffic flow pattern. Boaters entering the area at the stop sign will now go straight along Walnut Creek instead of making the right turn at the entrance. Signage should be in place from there to guide you through the "ready area" and on to the launch area. The Walnut Creek Channel dredging is underway and should be completed by this weekend. All this combined with the much improved launch docks should ease congestion dramatically. |

Posted by: Sherry Date Posted: 15:26:44 5/16/09 |
| Welcome back. I have a couple things to share with you about the construction that is going on here at Walnut Creek. It should be pretty much done by this coming weekend. First, the “Get Ready” area is now on the South side of the marina. The traffic flow will be greatly enhanced by this. The vehicles with boats will go straight when they come to the stop sign and go along the creek to the "Get Ready" area. There will be two rows for Getting Ready and one middle lane for those boaters who just launch. We are asking that there is courtesy shown for the boats who are "getting ready" so they will have no trouble getting out. Here is a further away shot of the “Get Ready” area while standing on the launch area. Then when exiting the lake the boats are to stay to the left and go out through what is now the "Tie Down" area. It is where the old "Get Ready" area used to be by the Sunset Gardens Memorial Wall and the anchor. Second, the road leading into the marina is one way coming in for vehicles only. NO BOATS! The barrier down the middle is gone and they are now paving the whole thing in. The boats will be able to Exit using the road but NO entering. I drew up a diagram (not scale) of what it should look like when it is done. I am no artist but this should give you some ideas. |

Posted by: Ron Date Posted: 15:52:59 5/14/09 |
| The 6 launch ramps at Walnut Creek have seen an improvement. The improvement is to the end ramps. The two have been updated with additional floating launch dock extensions. The missing triangles have now been filled in with dockages. This will give the launching area a 40 percent increase in usable launch ramps when the place is very busy. Many boaters never wanted to use these two end ramps because of the missing pieces. It has taken many years of wanting this small improvement. This alone will greatly speed up the launch and recovery during busy times. Hat off to the PFBC for the fine job!!!!! |

| March 19th, 2009 West Erie County, DWCO Randy Leighton, WCO Brook Tolbert Conditions: Although there are few steelhead hanging around in the deeper pools, the chapter is pretty much closed for another spectacular steelhead season an end with the tribs giving way to plenty of suckers, bass, and a few catfish. Anglers are turning their focus to the Lake in search of trophy bass, lake trout and early season perch. Bass fishing has been good to excellent in the Bay and east of Presque Isle Bay off the old International Paper site. Tube jigs, blade baits and shiners fished in 25 to 40 feet of water along the shoreline has been productive. Bass have moved into the tribs and can be found in the deeper areas of lower Elk and Walnut Creeks. Remember, we are currently in the trophy bass season on Lake Erie, Presque Isle Bay and the tribs. The daily limit is one fish with a minimum size of 20". Regular bass season begins on June 13th for Lake Erie, Presque Isle Bay and the tribs when the limit goes to 4 fish per day with a minimum size of 15" Lake Trout fishing has been good to excellent as evident with this weeks photos. Lunker Lake trout have been hitting out of the Northeast Marina. A number of perch are being picked up on calm days in 20 to 25 feet of water west of Walnut Creek, although reports have been hit or miss. There have also been a few unconfirmed reports of good perch fishing due north of the Conneaut, Ohio harbor. Current Lake Erie water temperature is 57 degrees of Toledo, 51 degrees off Cleveland and 52 degrees off the Port of Erie. Walnut Creek Access: Many changes are underway at the Walnut Creek Access Area. A dramatic change in the traffic pattern is in process with new roadways, paving, and additional parking being added. As are most such projects, it should be a temporary inconvenience for a long term solution to the crowded launch conditions. Boaters will see changes in the launch ramps, most noticeably the end ramp walkways have been modified to make them as user friendly as the center walkways. Ramps have also been lengthened. |

| April 29th, 2009 West Erie County, DWCO Randy Leighton, WCO Brook Tolbert Conditions: As the spring steelhead season winds down, area anglers know that Erie offers plenty of other action as one season just blends in to the next. Bass fishing has been good and high speed bass boats have already been invading Presque Isle Bay searching for trophy fish. Crappie fishing around Presque Isle has been hot with catches fair to good this past weekend, depending on who you talk to.. Good areas to try have been off the second and third parking lots on Presque Isle. Shiners and a variety of small tube jigs have been pulling them in. Perch fishing off the North and South Piers along the Erie Channel has been fair to good at times with a number of jumbos pulled in. Shiners fished off the bottom on perch rigs are the ticket. With this weeks in season trout stockings, the lower areas of Elk Creek, Crooked Creek, and the Upper Gravel Pit Pond in Fairview will be good choices for stockies. Anglers have been having good luck at the Gravel Pit Pond with shiners and red worms. Lake Erie water temperature off Toledo is 52 degrees, off Cleveland, 47 degrees and off the Port of Erie, 51 degrees Walnut Creek Access Information: |

| April 22nd, 2009 West Erie County, DWCO Randy Leighton, WCO Brook Tolbert Conditions: Recent rain has put some flow back in the Erie Tribs and likely put the stockies from last week on the move. The big opener last weekend was a crowded one with the weather cooperating and plenty of anglers and their families taking advantage. There are still plenty of stockies to be caught through out the tribs as well as at the Fairview Gravel Pit pond, the Waterworks Ponds at Presque Isle, and Lake pleasant. A good number of steelhead were caught this past weekend along side the stockies on upper Elk Creek....many of them very fresh. Very warm temperatures are forecast for this weekend which should begin to wind down the spring steelhead season and open the door to boating season. Spring Bass and crappie fishing is picking up as Bay temperatures slowly rise. Many area launch ramps are in and boaters are taking to the bay and even the Lake when the weather permits. As the Lake temperatures slowly warm, and it has been slow, it wont be long before the perch schools form and the migrating walleye move in from the Western Basin. Perch fishing has been fair to good along the on the City side of the Bayfront as well as off the North Pier. Current trib conditions as of this writing are flowing with good color. Current Lake Erie water temperatures are 46 degrees off Toledo, 42 degrees of Cleveland and 46 degrees off the Port of Erie. Upcoming Erie Area Kids Derbies: |

| April 15th, 2009 West Erie County, DWCO Randy Leighton, WCO Brook Tolbert Conditions: Steelhead season is beginning to wind down with the remaining fish widely scattered and many of them heavily winter worn. If you are after suckers, the tribs are loaded Much of the attention around the area has focused on the spring crappie and bass fishing in and around Presque Isle Bay both along the shore line and by boat. At this point, weather forecasts look good for the weekend opener, although a little rain would be helpful. The area tribs are running on the low and clear side with some flow. Current Lake Erie water temperature off Toledo is 43 degrees, off Cleveland, 40 degrees, and off the Port of Erie, 42 degrees. A Few Words Well Worth Repeating About This Weekend: |

| April 7th, 2009 West Erie County, DWCO Randy Leighton, WCO Brook Tolbert Conditions: Winter conditions rolled back in to Erie with some spring time snow and cold temperatures. The additional precipitation has helped keep the tribs flowing and stained. There are fresh steelhead mixed in with the winter weather worn fish and the suckers have spread heavily through most of the area. Steelhead are scattered but remain throughout the tribs. A fair number of the smaller "jack" sized steelhead have moved in to the access area on Elk Creek up to and around the first bend by the boat launch. Presque Isle Bay has been popular with a good number of steelhead given up along with fair to good catches of spring time crappie . Current Lake Erie water temperature off Toledo is 44 degrees, off Cleveland, 40 degrees and of the Port of Erie, 43 degrees. |

| April 1st, 2009 West Erie County, DWCO Randy Leighton, WCO Brook Tolbert Conditions: Rain this past weekend put some color and flow into the area tribs helping to keep steelhead conditions good. Night time temperatures have remained in the 30s and 40s helping to keep steelhead around for a while. By Tuesday afternoon, levels were dropping although decent flow and some color remains. Anglers have been doing fair to good along the lakeshore at the mouths of Trout and Godfrey runs wind and waves permitting. Steelhead can be found throughout Presque Isle Bay and Misery Bay. Now is the time to go after the slab crappie in in Presque Isle Bay. Current Lake Erie water temperature is 42 degrees off Toledo, 38 degrees off Cleveland and 38 degrees off the Port of Erie. The Marina docks are in along with the launch ramps. Boaters exiting the channel are advised to used caution regarding water depth. We have had a number of high, hard flowing water events that may have helped to clear the channel but at the same time may have built up sand bars just outside the channel. |

| March 18th, 2009 West Erie County, DWCO Randy Leighton, WCO Brook Tolbert Conditions: The snow and ice are gone and we have actually seen some sunshine and mild temperatures (for Erie) over the last week. Some drifting ice remains on the lake, although the tribs are completely ice free. Water levels have started to drop and clear quite a bit. Water flow has been good and with normal Spring rainfall we should have good conditions for a while. No doubt, anglers will be hooking steelhead along with stocked trout on opening day. Anglers were crowding in at the Walnut Project waters and the Manchester Hole over the weekend. Catches were fair to good this past weekend with most fish being somewhat to very fresh. A good number of people were trying their luck on the wall at Walnut looking for fresh steelhead. Good catches and a number of limits were observed along the lake shore at Trout Run. The most popular baits were egg sacs dyed pink or chartreuse, single eggs, egg patterns and shiners. Elk Creek has been productive from the access area to the mouth with a good number of fresh fish caught. The upper stretches from the Legion Park area to Folley's End have been good although the fish are still scattered. Cascade Creek along the city side of the Bayfront is holding a good number of steelhead. Many boaters were out on Presque Isle Bay this past weekend after crappie and steelhead. A good number of out of state vehicles were observed over the weekend in all the crowded areas, a true testimony to our world class fishery. Walleye Change: Walleye season closed on March 15th on Lake Erie, Presque Isle Bay and the Tributaries and will reopen on May 2nd with a minimum size of 15" and a daily creel limit of 6 fish. | March 11th, 2009 West Erie County, DWCO Randy Leighton, WCO Brook Tolbert Conditions: With the relatively mild weather (for Erie) and significant rainfall, there is little ice left to be found in the area. Heavy run off had the tribs rolling high and hard this past weekend. Anglers fishing the rolling muddy over the weekend were having a surprising amount of success on the Walnut Project waters. Most anglers were using shiners or egg sacs. On and off rain continues to keep the tribs at generally high levels but in very fishable in many areas. There is open water at the mouth of Trout Run. Presque Isle is nearly ice free and a few boats have already been spotted. Take Care Of Stocked Steelhead Smolts: Steelhead smolts look like small rainbows and are often mistaken for stocked trout. They are typically smaller then the "stockies" and should be carefully released. They hold the future of Steelhead fishing in our area. If a Steelhead smolt is hooked, reel it in quickly without overstressing the fish. Gently release the smolt as quickly as you can. If the hook is swallowed it is generally best to just cut the line and release the fish for the best chance of survival. Spring is Just a Couple of Weeks Away, Even in Erie: |

Conditions: Area temperatures have remained well below freezing again putting many areas back into freeze over. There is still open water in many areas of the tribs. Temperatures are predicted to climb into the upper 40s perhaps bringing another quick melt down. Presque Isle Bay has been firming up, however there is still open water and the pending warming up could make for hazardous conditions
Posted Access Advisory: Access to Elk Creek in in Mckean off of Old West Road is now a posted area. This area is one mile east of 832 on the left off of West road. The road is a short and un marked with a dead end. The landowner access to the trib from this road is now posted (signage is in process). Access to this particular stretch of Elk is now by water only. Anglers should have no reason to park in this area without access to Elk Creek. This posted area will be enforced.

Conditions: Frigid conditions have surrounded the Erie area over the last week with most areas on the trib well frozen over. As of Tuesday, there was some open water at the mouth of Trout Run. Anglers are reminded to assure they are fishing the Lake and not the tributary (State Nursery Waters) in this area. The Walnut Basin is frozen over and by the looks of the forecast this week, ice in most areas should be getting better. Anglers have not been venturing out on Presque Isle as some areas still look on the thin side, however, Misery bay has remained solid with anglers working that area this past weekend. Anglers are reminded that ice conditions are not monitored by any public agency and that caution should be exercised especially during these transition periods.
The Erie is closing in on a seasonal record of nearly 150" as measured at the Erie Airport. Many nearby surrounding areas have had well over 200" and a few pushing 250" for the season making this one of the snowiest seasons ever.

| February 17th, 2009 West Erie County, DWCO Randy Leighton, WCO Brook Tolbert Conditions: Last week brought an almost complete meltdown of the area tribs and left most of the larger ice fishing areas including Presque Isle unsafe. The tribs have remained open and the major runoff has begun to subside opening up many areas to steelhead fishing. This weekend could bring good conditions on the tribs. Early morning hours are slushy with some drifting skim ice, however, mid day temperatures and a little sun have kept things mostly open. Fish will be scattered and weather worn with a few fresh fish mixed in near the mouths. Hard water anglers are advised to used extreme caution for now. Jimmy Dallas: |

| February 9th, 2009 West Erie County, DWCO Randy Leighton, WCO Brook Tolbert Conditions: Warmer temperatures this past weekend have broken down most of the ice on the area tribs. Major ice jams have built up at the tributary mouths temporarily blocking fishing access. Most areas South of Route 5 are open and flowing fast as of Tuesday afternoon. Fish are scattered. Reported catches are coming from those anglers having the patience and persistence to do a lot of walking and looking. Most fish that are found have been in the tribs most of the winter. Cold clear waters after ice out are a good time to work the micro jigs in an attempt to trigger strikes. Egg sacs, singles and egg patterns will work nicely as the water clears and of course shiners are always a good choice in cold water. As the ice jams at the mouths subside, we should see additional fish moving in, hopefully setting the stage for a strong spring run. Any ice fishing in the area should be approached with the utmost caution. Ice at the mouth of Trout Run along the lake shore should be considered unstable for fishing at this time. Ice fishing slowed this past weekend as the ice on Presque Isle Bay began to burn off. With a day or so of warm weather predicted before the next cold snap, anglers should be using extreme caution when venturing out on the ice. Winter Stocking: Lake Pleasant, the Upper Gravel Pit Pond in Fairview and the East and West Basin Ponds at Presque Isle have all been stocked in the last few weeks as par of the winter stocking program. | February 4th, 2009 West Erie County, DWCO Randy Leighton, WCO Brook Tolbert Conditions: Frigid temperatures have been the norm in our area with only a few breaks in the weather. The cold temperatures have kept hard water fishing conditions good. Presques Isle Bay has been covered with huts on the weekends with anglers doing fair to good. The steelhead fans have been drilling ice at the Walnut Creek Marina and channel, the lake shore at Trout and Godfrey Runs and at the Elk Creek Access area. Catch rates for steelhead through the ice in these areas has been good. In the midst of all the heavy ice, there is a surprising amount of open water in some areas. Anglers were fishing open water south of the Access area on Elk Creek as well as a number of areas on the East side mile tribs. This is also the season for the ice boaters on the Bay. These high speed wind sleds are typically found on the West end of Presque Isle Bay. Anglers are advised to watch out for them as they move fast and have limited maneuverability PFBC Basic Boating Class: Area officers from the Pennsylvania Fish and Boat Commission, will be conducting a safe boating class on Saturday March 21st from 8:30 AM until 5:00 PM. | January 28th, 2009 West Erie County, DWCO Randy Leighton, WCO Brook Tolbert Conditions: Ice fishing activity has been a frenzy in the Erie area with anglers taking to the hard water in search of some action. Reports have been varied and widely scattered with reports of good catches of perch and gills to "tried everywhere, and came up short". Fishing in one stationary area certainly does stack the odds against the angler, and in winter conditions, moving around and drilling more holes often doesn’t seem worth it, however the patient angler and one who knows when to give up on a spot is more likely to score. Many anglers miss the subtle strikes that are common when ice fishing simply because they aren't paying attention as well as they could be. Watching for light strikes on five tip ups requires some concentration. Changing baits or jigs from time to time can also help. The noise factor certainly can come in to play as well, once the holes are drilled and you are settled in, its probably best to go into stealth mode. Temperature forecasts are predicted to be well below freezing over the next few week. Additional snow is expected and anglers coming from out of town would be wise to check weather forecasts and road conditions. PFBC Basic Boating Class: |

| January 20th, 2009 West Erie County, DWCO Randy Leighton, WCO Brook Tolbert Conditions: Erie is no stranger to snow and bitterly cold weather with over 100 inches of snow so far this year and temperatures dropping into the single digits at times. Erie has already reached the top ten heaviest snowfalls on record and could break the record for the season. In spite of these conditions, anglers are on the go around the area. Ice has covered the tribs in all but the fastest moving areas however, anglers have been ice fishing the Walnut Creek Project waters, the Manchester Hole and the Walnut Creek Marina basin. With ice thickness varied and air pockets where the tribs have dropped below the ice, Anglers ice fishing the tribs should use extreme caution. Patient anglers have been pulling a few steelhead through the ice. Lake Erie is about 90 percent frozen over with solid and broken drift ice. Ice build up along the shoreline around Godfrey and Trout run is very rough and fishing has been difficult in those areas. Ice fishing on Presque Isle Bay is well underway with reports of 7to 10 inches of snow covered ice. Ice fishing reports always are varied depending on location and luck. A fair number of gills, on the small side, have been reported with perch catch rates a bit low. This past weekend both Presque Isle Bay and Marina Bay were heavily dotted with huts. Winds were high and temperatures were frigid with nearly all anglers hunkered down in huts. This weekend should be a good one for the hard water fanatics. Ice Fishing Regulations: |

| January 14th, 2009 West Erie County, DWCO Randy Leighton, WCO Brook Tolbert Conditions: Considerable snow and the onset of bitter cold conditions have quickly thrown the Erie area into winter deep freeze. Area tribs are frozen in most areas with the remaining open water likely to succumb to predicted single digit temperatures. Presque Isle Bay is ice covered along with a thick blanket of snow. The thick snow can actually act as insulation over the ice making it difficult to gage how safe conditions really are. The extreme cold front moving into the area should help strengthen ice conditions. Lake Erie has begun to freeze with considerable drifting ice and build up along the shorelines. Anglers attempting any hard water angling should as always use extreme caution. Ice conditions are not monitored by any agency and bait shop reports are often hear say from the anglers. The decision of whether or not conditions are safe is yours and yours alone. Be cautious and responsible in your decision to "walk the ice" Ice Warnings: As ice builds along the lake shore, so does the formation of "ice dunes". These beautiful formations occur as the waves and spray pound the shoreline and gradually build up frozen mounds. As spectacular as they are to view, they are equally dangerous to walk on. Many of these dunes are hollow inside with open water underneath. A fall through a dune can leave an individual trapped with little chance of escape. Tips for Ice Angling: |

| January 7th, 2009 West Erie County, DWCO Randy Leighton, WCO Brook Tolbert Conditions: Erie has enjoyed a break from snow and rain allowing the tribs to subside significantly. Day and night temperatures have made slushy conditions especially in the morning hours ice forming in the slow shallow pools. Most areas remain open, although the fish have scattered and continue move into the upper stretches. There is still reasonable flow although conditions are clear. This past weekend conditions were crowded at both the Walnut and Elk Creek Accesses. The Erie area has had well over 60" of snow so far this winter helping to keep the tribs at over all good levels. Forecasts are calling for night time temps dipping into the teens and perhaps the beginning of freeze over. Of course this help the hard water fishing season. Anglers are still pulling fish from the Walnut Creek Basin between freeze overs and the Manchester Hole is still loaded. Anglers targeting the lake shore at Trout and Godfrey Runs are doing fair, conditions permitting. WCO Jim Smolko reports that the East side trips are holding good numbers of fish. Winter Trib Tips: |

| December 31st, 2008 West Erie County, DWCO Randy Leighton, WCO Brook Tolbert Conditions: Erie was no exception to the mild temperatures this past weekend. The warm weather brought a rapid melt down and once again put the tribs at near flood stages. This combined with extremely high wind conditions made steelhead fishing extremely difficult if not impossible. By Monday afternoon and in to Tuesday the tribs began to drop to very fishable levels with the bonus being fresh fish moving in. Monday afternoon the Walnut Creek Access area was extremely crowded with anglers doing fair to well in the elbow to elbow conditions from the "Wall" to the "Chutes". Elk Creek was still on the high side but has subsided nicely. As of Tuesday afternoon most areas had good flow and color. Colder night time temps are predicted and will likely give way to early morning slush over the next few days and into the weekend. The ice on Presque Isle Bay has melted for now, and on the calmer days a few boats have been spotted. A surprising number of steelhead hold in Presque Isle Bay throughout the winter and can be caught by boat or through the ice, conditions permitting. Burbot Time: Anglers are braving the difficult weather conditions and beginning to target Burbot along the North Pier and to some extent the South Pier. Most Burbot are accidentally hooked by unsuspecting Perch anglers using minnows and perch rigs however, more and more anglers are going after them. Anglers specifically targeting Burbot will typically use the largest shiners they can get, often using two on one hook and fish them on the bottom. Large jigging spoons worked on the bottom can be worth a try as well. Burbot are a fresh water cod that enjoy the coldest depths of Great Lakes. As water temperatures drop, Burbot will move into shallower water and can often be caught from the North and South piers. Burbot has a mild taste and can be enjoyed fried, baked, or broiled. Best Wishes: 2008 has been a busy year especially the always chaotic steelhead season. Although some are quick to criticize, the the fact remains that the Erie area offers us some of the best fishing opportunities in North America. Casual observations always reveal license plates from all over the United States and even Canada. The fishing opportunities, unposted access, and the continued beauty of the area are all what we make it. If there are laws and regulations, they will be broken, but it is of course by the few. For the overwhelming majority of ethical sportsmen, both local and those who migrate long distances to enjoy our area, fishing is still the enjoyable experience and get away it has always has been and hopefully it will be well into the future. It is ours to cherish and protect. On behalf of Waterways Conservation Officers Brook Tolbert, Ed Stuart, Jim Smolko, and their teams of Deputies along with the Northwest Region office staff, Best wishes for a happy, prosperous, and satisfying New Year. He caught it at the Stop Sign hole on Walnut Creek. He was using sucker spawn and the color was orange. The Stop Sign hole from what I hear has been good all week. There are MARINA: The marina has a little skimming of ice on it but it probably won’t last since we are to be getting some nice 50 degree weather tomorrow. But it won’t last. Tuesday thru Thursday it is supposed to snow and be in the 30’s. Here is another one of the skimming of ice. | December 10th, 2008 West Erie County, DWCO Randy Leighton, WCO Brook Tolbert Conditions: Frigid conditions and ice forming this past weekend gave way to relatively mild temperatures and heavy rain on Tuesday. The remaining snow was quickly melted off and sent the tribs in high and fast flowing conditions. Cold temperatures are again expected towards the end of the week and as the tribs subside we may have good fishing conditions for the weekend. This time of year, conditions change fast and for those traveling long distances, a quick phone call to one of the area bait shops may be wise. There are still large numbers of fish holding in the nursery waters at Trout Run. Most of the fish are blackened and weak however, close observation revealed a surprising number of fresh fish mixed in the pack. Fishing the shoreline at Trout Run is usually good throughout the winter and into the spring wind and waves permitting. The Walnut Creek Basin has been giving up good numbers of fish for those willing to brave the weather. There was skim ice forming on Presque Isle Bay before the rain and the mild temperatures, something we haven't seen this early in a number of years. |

| November 26th, 2008 West Erie County, DWCO Randy Leighton, WCO Brook Tolbert Conditions: The Erie area has had plenty of rain and wet snow to keep the tribs at good fishing levels although we are seeing winter daytime temperatures in the low 30s and dropping into the low 20s at night. Early morning anglers are finding some slush and ice in the slower moving pools, but in general conditions are good to excellent. The crowds are starting to thin out as deer season approaches allowing plenty of elbow room. If you are new to fly fishing, the thinner crowds make it a good time to start. Anglers fishing the Walnut Basin are doing fair and anglers fishing the Wall at Walnut have seen a fair number of fresh fish. Good cold weather baits for the drift anglers include egg sacs, single eggs, skein, shiners, plastic worms in pink, white, and chartreuse, and small jigs tipped with a maggot or a wax worm. Fly anglers will often use single egg patterns and sucker spawn patterns in white, pink, orange, cream, and peach. Woolly buggers and minnow imitating patterns are also popular. Anglers fishing the Walnut Basin are doing fair and anglers fishing the Wall at Walnut have seen a fair number of fresh fish. Reminder on Perch: |

| November 19th, 2008 West Erie County, DWCO Randy Leighton, WCO Brook Tolbert Conditions: A heavy wet snow storm this past Sunday left a half a foot of of the white stuff along the Erie Lake shore area and up to 20 plus inches in some areas of Erie County. Daytime temperatures just above the freezing mark are making for a very slow melt down helping to keep the tribs at higher but very fishable levels. Even throughout the storm on Sunday, a good number of anglers were out giving it their all. Waves on Lake Erie were hitting 14 to 16 feet at times. Although more snow is expected in the forecast, a gradual accumulation tends to deepen the tribs and add that nice green dark color to the water. These conditions can often be the best of the season. Anglers have been doing very well at the Walnut Creek Marina basin, often fishing through out the night. The Lake Shore at Trout Run has been productive when the Lake is calm. Fish are now scattered well throughout the tribs allowing anglers to spread out and enjoy all the area has to offer. The Circle of Life: Local anglers fishing the Lakeshore at Trout Run and many observers were treated to a display of "Legal fish netting" last week. Area PFBC employees were harvesting female fish in the State Nursery Waters at Trout Run for their eggs. An abundant supply of males had already been collected. The action was fast and furious as the fish were scooped. Great care is taken to assure minimal shock to the fish. The fish are taken to the Fairview Hatchery where they are fertilized and hatched. The breed fish are then returned unharmed to the area tribs as part of the "Circle of Life" of the Erie Steelhead program. With temperatures climbing in the fifties and rain predicted combined with the gradual snow run off, we should see a nice rise in the tribs along with some good color. The West county tribs are loaded with steelhead and the bite generally has been great. Crowded areas this past weekend included the Legion Park area, the Girard Boro Park Area near the sewage treatment plant, the Elk Creek Access area and of course the Walnut Creek Access area. Current trib conditions are still on the clear side with fair to good flow in many areas. |

It took him 2 ½ minutes to hook the first fish. It was around 20 inches long. He was using Power Bait. Color was Sherbert. He was standing on the south side of marina. |

| November 5th, 2008 West Erie County, DWCO Randy Leighton, WCO Brook Tolbert Conditions: The rain from last week brought the West County Tribs up enough put the steelhead on the move again. A good number of fish moved in and up stream as far south as the Mckean Hole on Elk Creek and the Millcreek Mall on Walnut Creek. Fishing was good to excellent through this past week end as the tribs lowered. The tribs have now dropped to the lower levels we saw before the rain with fish holding in the deeper pools and pockets. This past weekend saw anglers frequently catching their limits through out the tribs and conditions as crowded as it can get. The Walnut Creek Marina basin is now open for fishing and anglers have been doing very well there, especially at night. Current trib conditions as of this writing are low and clear with some flow. Lake Erie water temperature off the Port of Erie is 55 degrees. From the Department of Environmental Protection Regarding Walnut Creek: |

| October 29th, 2008 West Erie County, DWCO Randy Leighton, WCO Brook Tolbert Conditions: The long dry spell was recently broken with some precipitation this past weekend however it was not significant enough to have much effect on the tribs. Generally conditions are still pretty low and clear in most areas. Steelhead have been able to work there way upstream above route 20 only to often get trapped in what few deeper pools there are. None the less, anglers have been making the best of it with many limits taken. Light line and small presentations are simply a must. There has been plenty of elbow room in the upstream areas with the crowded conditions remaining near the mouths and access areas. Wind and extreme wave conditions combined with gale force winds have kept boaters off the lake. Waves were hitting 12 to 14 feet as of Tuesday afternoon. Current West County trib conditions are low and clear with some flow. Current Lake Erie water temperature off the Port of Erie is 56 degrees. Walnut Creek Basin: Weather permitting, the docks and launch ramps are scheduled to be removed this week with the Walnut Creek Marina basin schedule to be open to fishing on Friday October 31st. Costumes are optional. The Walnut Creek Basin can provide great fishing, especially with the low trib c |
