West Erie County, DWCO Randy Leighton, rglerie@msn.com

Conditions Spring Bass and crappie season is picking up as Bay temperatures slowly rise. Most area launch ramps are in and boaters are taking to the bay and even the Lake when the weather permits. Area temperatures are still on the cool side. As the Lake temperatures slowly warm, and it has been slow, it wont be long before the perch schools form and the migrating walleye move in from the Western Basin. Perch and Bass fishing has fair to good along the North and South Piers as has perch. Bass anglers are reporting the action is getting better throughout Presque Isle Bay. There are still a few steelhead remaining in the area tribs, but the numbers are low having been replaced by suckers, small mouth bass and few catfish.
Lake Erie water temperature as of this writing is 50 degrees.

Walnut Creek Access: The docks and launch ramps are back in at the Walnut Creek Access and the Channel is being dredged this week. The Walnut Creek Access office is now open on a full time basis. Hours are Monday through Thursday, 8:00 AM to 6:30 PM. Friday and Saturday from 6:00 AM to 10:00 PM and Sundays from 6:00 AM to 8:00 PM. New and longer launch ramp docks are in place and dredging of the basin and channel have been completed. The Walnut Creek office can provide fishing licenses, ice, weather information, and most PFBC publications and literature...Vending machines and restrooms are available.

Fish for Free Days
Fish for Free Days allow anyone to legally fish for Pennsylvania's most popular fish without a fishing license. Each year the Pennsylvania Fish and Boat Commission's Executive Director designates 2 Fish for Free Days. No fishing license is required to fish on Pennsylvania's waterways all day May 30th and September 5th, 2011. All other fishing regulations still apply.

Copies of the Anglers Summary booklet can obtained at most area bait and tackle shops and at the Walnut Creek Access office free of charge (or view/print the On Line Version ). The Erie area offers a bonanza of fishing opportunities for the new angler. Plenty of shore fishing is available to new anglers along the Bay Front Highway on Presque Isle Bay as well as much of the shore line at Presque Isle State Park. Fish for fee days are the opportunity for the inexperienced angler to try his luck as well as a great opportunity to introduce a friend to fishing. Click here for more information. This is also a great opportunity to get that spouse involved as well.
