WESTERN ERIE COUNTY
WCO JOHN BOWSER DISTRICT 1014

TROUT SEASON...It has been great seeing the younger anglers hook into some
nice steelhead while fishing for the stocked trout. Although the opening day
weather was brutal we have had some great days to make up for it. There are
still plenty of trout in the streams and a lot more yet to come. Remember
that only Elk, Crooked, Cascade, and 20 Mile have stocked trout, those in the
other streams are steelhead smolts and should be handled with extreme care
prior to being placed back in the water.

BASS... The rules are currently 1 Bass/day ... 20" or over in length. They
should be moving into the 15' - 30' depth range along the Erie shoreline for
what many consider to be a "World-Class Bass Fishery". It is not uncommon to
hook into 100+ fish/day drifting in this depth range. Tube jigs seem to work
well with the weather conditions determining color choice.

BOATING CHALLENGE COURSE... scheduled June 6th @ 5:00 PM at the Elk Valley
Sportsmen Club Building. This is located off of Rt. 5 behind the Elk Valley
Sports Store in Lake City. Pre-registration is a must by calling
814-774-0928 & leaving name & contact phone number. Class size is limited to
40 persons and is on a first come-first serve basis. Approximately 15
openings remain as of date of this article. A second class will be scheduled
on the June 13th if demand requires it. This course is for "experienced"
operators only in lieu of the complete Basic Boating Course !!

Albion Sportsmen's Club Raceway Break-in... In the early morning hours of
April 25th, vandals opened the retaining screens and removed the water level
boards allowing the unauthorized stocking of approximately 300 brood trout
that were intended for various children's fishing derbies around the county.
This type of activity is illegal and will be prosecuted to the fullest extent
of the law. Anyone with any information on the actors involved in this
activity should contact Wco Bowser at 814-774-0928 or his cellphone @
881-5657. There is a reward offered by a group of Albion sportsmen for
information which leads to the successful prosecution of these people that
would "steal" fish from kids for their own use.

BOATING... be aware of the dangers of hypothermia and changing weather
conditions. Lake Erie storms will kick up quickly this time of year. A
smart boater does the following:
have other boats go out with you
wear your life jacket at all times
check & double check safety equipment
run some "shake-down" cruises before venturing out too far
