It's been the attack of the "03's"! Totally unbelievable. That's the only way to describe what we are experiencing here in Ashtabula, and from what I am gathering, lake wide. The three old Walleyes from the record smashing successful hatch of 2003 are everywhere. They are so aggressive that everyone is catching record fast limits of these great eating size Walleyes. Most of these three year olds are 17 - 20 inches in length, and weigh 2 - 3 lbs. These fish are so dominant that it has now become difficult trying to catch some of the larger fish that we all know are still out there somewhere.

Still though, on most trips we are managing to catch a few bigger ones although not very many at this point. Steelhead Trout have been few and far between as well. I have been way out, in close to shore, east, and west, it just doesn't seem to matter. We are just being inundated with these beautiful three year olds which will carry this lake for years to come. Somehow we'll get through this year, next year we will see all these fish at 4 lbs. plus.

Though, I wish everyone could catch nothing but monster Walleyes, have calm seas, and a picture perfect day. You have to take what the lake gives you, and just be thankful that you are catching fish. For some of the groups where limits have come extremely fast, the alternative is to be out there all day and not catch anything. I've been on both sides of that fence. Believe me, I'll take the quick limits anytime.

Most of these fish are now being taken in the 60 - 70 ft. depths. Aboard "The Trophy" we have switched to a wire line and crankbaits program off the big planer boards. The big Dipseys have been very productive as well. The bottom line is when you are heavy into the fish, everything works. We've waited a long time to see fishing this good.

I have one day that just opened up due to a cancellation that I need to fill if anyone is interested. That date is next week, Tuesday, July 11th. Anyone interested may contact me on my mobile/boat number 216-387-2656. Water temps are holding at around 72 degrees, and marina fuel prices are around $3.149. The weather looks great for the next few days.

Capt. Walt
