Lake Erie Fishing Report: Oct. 23, 2002 Central Basin - Water temperature off Cleveland is 59*. Walleye fishing has been fair, north of Huron 4 to 7 miles, Ruggles Reef and at the Lorain Sand Bar. Anglers are using bottom bouncers, dipsy divers and downriggers with spoons in confusion, watermelon, green/white, blue/yellow and worm harnesses. Walleyes are measuring 15 to 28 inches. Perch fishing has been good off Huron, Vermilion, Lorain, Geneva, Cleveland Edgewater and Wildwood State Park, 2 to 5 miles offshore in 45 to 55 feet of water. Yellow perch are 8 to 12 inches long. Smallmouth Bass fishing has been good at the breakwalls of Fairport, Ashtabula and Conneaut in 15 to 25 feet of water using leeches, crayfish, jigs and small spinners. Steelhead fishing is good on the Grand River from the short pier in Fairport Harbor to the Painesville dam. Anglers are using small spinners, spoons and jigs tipped with maggots. Anglers are also trolling for steelhead in the Grand River. The steelhead limit is 2 fish per day per angler.
