Well, it’s over. No, not the fabulous Walleye fishing here off the waters of Ashtabula Harbor. There is no sign of that slowing down any at all incredibly enough. No, it’s my fishing season 2025 which is over with. As I write this final article on this warm Friday evening I actually do have a couple of more trips to run this weekend if we can get out. Old Lake Erie is supposed to kick back up again though these next few days so it’s a mighty big if that we even get out at this point. But after this weekend regardless of everything, I’m done. I’m all out of scheduled trips so that will be it for me. And that’s more then fine. I’ve had enough. It was a great run! |

Quickly looking back at these past couple of weeks we were blessed once again with a nice stretch of rather calm fall like weather. Cool night time hours and crisp lovely mornings. It really felt like fall out there. Dawn keeps breaking later and later each day now. And the angle of the rising sun has changed dramatically almost rising off of land to the south now rather then out of the water in the middle of the eastern horizon. Yes all signs indicate that it’s about over. Other then the fact that the fish just won’t leave! Ha! |

I remember in past Septembers years ago scrambling like crazy to find any Walleyes by this time of the month. Many times running long distances to the east right on the Ohio/ PA border to find and fish for some of the local Walleyes that seemed to hang out there way longer then what we had here close to Ashtabula. The big migrating schools had moved on to wherever they go in the fall. Back west I suppose. But that was then and nowadays each fall around Ashtabula the fish hang in there longer and longer each year. These past two weeks were no exception. Fishing was as fantastic as it has been all summer. There is still just a incredible school of Walleye out there and not that far out from shore at all even. Simply amazing! |

But all good things must end sometime and before we get caught in some real lousy weather we’re going to wrap it up and call it a year. A very good year at that! The weather overall was pretty decent this year for a change. Fishing once it heated up by mid May was just phenomenal everyday all season long. In 39 fishing seasons of full time chartering I’ve never seen it even come close to how good it was this year. So very thankful! And speaking of thankful, none of this would have been possible for me if it wasn’t for all of you that once again came out and fished with us. As in previous years I am humbled by your loyalty, friendship and generosity. It was a very fun year for everyone including me. So what does the future hold for us going forward? At this point I’m not really sure. Both Joyce, my wife and full time first mate nowadays and myself have some health issues that we have to overcome in this offseason. Her with her back and myself with my joint pain issues. I think we will be OK and we plan on fishing next year but time will tell. Sooner or later though retirement looms near and there is no denying that . We shall see. But for now as I sign off, again I’m thanking all of you that came out this year from the very bottom of my heart and even to those that just followed along here in print with these fishing reports. I enjoyed doing them for you! I’m wishing everyone a safe and prosperous offseason and we hope to see everyone one way or another next year! Capt. Walt Trophy Charters |
