Astonishing! Astounding! Stunning! Breathtaking! Awesome! Sensational! Remarkable! Spectacular! Stupendous! Phenomenal! Extraordinary! Incredible! Unbelievable! Mind blowing! Flabbergasting! These are all just a few words that are all synonym’s for the word AMAZING! And that is the only way to describe what is going on with our Walleye fishing this whole summer and in particular these last couple of weeks. Just when you think it can’t get any better, well it does! My God! How many Walleyes must be out there right now offshore of Ashtabula Harbor and the whole south shore of Lake Erie really. Did I mention in my list of words UNREAL?

As I mentioned in my previous report, the gravy train near shore trips that we all enjoyed for so long are pretty much over with now as the bulk of the fish have slid well offshore on us as per usual each summer. We were both blessed and spoiled that the fishing in close just a few miles from the harbor lasted as long as it did this year. Average distances now to the very best schools of fish are somewhere in the 12 to 15 mile range as of recently. As always, you can catch plenty of fish short of that and well beyond that. But you get in that 12 to 15 magical mile mark and well, refer back to my first paragraph in this fishing report! UNREAL!

These past couple of weeks have seen us retire the planer boards for hopefully the rest of the season. No way can you keep up with both planer boards and Dipsy Divers now. In fact, we’ve cut back on most trips from running six Dipsy Diver rods to running just four rods because we just can’t handle that many rods. And we are still knocking out whole boat limits of 30 to 42 fish daily in short order depending on how many people we have onboard each day with ease! Albeit a bit chaotic at times! OK, REALLY chaotic EVERY day! Lol! When we ran six rods with four guests, many a time we would have four people reeling and two other fish hanging and just waiting. Just about as fast as you can go on most days with the very first rod out! So in a attempt to slow things down we keep putting rods away each day especially as we draw closer to the maximum amount of fish as a boat that we can take on a trip. We have all been reelers at times whether you want to or not. What a glorious problem to have!

But we are having much longer boat rides now with way bigger and uglier fuel bills. I hate putting on all the extra wear and tear on the boat and motors everyday as well especially after last years late summer total engine failure which was a season ending catastrophe for my little fishing business. Between a new engine and lost trips that fiasco cost me well in excess of $20K! And that was on top of a summer last year that was plagued with many bad weather cancellations. Way more excessive lost trips last summer then in past years and way more then this summer so far knock on wood. Now if we could only just do something about the high marina fuel prices it would be a almost perfect year so far this summer. Marina fuel prices at my dock has been pegged stubbornly at $5.25 a gallon since May the 1st. It has not gone up or down a single cent. Ugh. I guess all businesses need to make money but gees! Fortunately most all my guys have been very generous this whole summer (as usual) and especially here lately now that we are running and trolling in excess of 30 miles plus each day. Man, you guys and the suicidal Walleyes are really making it hard for me to walk away from this little gig! Lol! To that I say, THANK YOU!
*We do have a handful of open dates the rest of this month of August including next SUNDAY August the 17th incase somebody else wants to witness this once in a lifetime Walleye fishing phenomenon. Call or text me @ 216-387-2656
