Going strong! As we are nearing the half way point of June already the fishing can only be described as epically phenomenal! And it really has been from about mid May on now. Aboard The Trophy we slugged it out the first couple of trips out in early May where we caught some Walleyes but didn’t limit out to now having a perfect string of about 25 trips of perfect BOAT limits everyday. All hands on deck have been reelers and many times we’ve had as many fish hooked up as we have had personnel onboard! Total controlled chaos! And I love it! Lol! All this fun and still back everyday for a late breakfast all maxed out. And quite easily at that if you haven't already gathered that yet! Someone please pinch me I must be dreaming! |

As predicted boat traffic has finally picked up a little bit but I will go as far to say that in the 39 years that I have been a full time charter captain out of Ashtabula Harbor that I have never seen it this quiet. I will also say that in 39 years of chartering that I have never seen the fishing this spectacularly good! What a weird, weird combination! The people that I feel really bad for is the fish cleaners. They show up for work reliably everyday for us and many days (thus far anyway) they clean my charters fish and that is the only load that they might get for the day. Very sad. I remind everyone to please take care of the cutters. A little tip money goes a long way! At a minimum I would suggest $5 bucks a man. They truly work very hard for what they earn. Many people don’t realize that they work for the marina and only get half of the money that the marina charges for this service. And if there are two cutters in the fish house they further split that again amongst themselves! That helps get you down the road faster but man that doesn’t help with the morale of the workers taking great care of your catch. One note though. It wouldn’t be fair if I didn’t mention that out of their half of the fish cleaning fees, management pays astronomical dumpster fees twice a week to get rid of the carcasses. High electric bills for the big walk in freezer where they store the guts till garbage day. Mind boggling high water bills and it just goes on and on like with any other business. Bottom line, please take care of the boys in the fish house because if I have to start cleaning the fish, I’ll make sure that you don’t catch any! Haha! |

So, everyone is leaving with a nice load of fresh Walleye fillets now. I tell everyone some of those fillets should never see the freezer! Nothing tops a fishing trip better then a meal of these incredibly tasty fish like having them the very day that you caught them or maybe the next day after you catch them. Everyone knows how to fry a fish and they are undoubtedly delicious that way but there are many other ways of fixing them that will also blow you away. We have some other ideas on our website under the Recipe button on trophycharters.com but here is one that is not on there that we ourselves enjoyed just a few days ago. You take about 4 fillets if their not too big and cut them into smaller pieces. Then in a skillet pour about half a bottle of Kraft Tomato Bacon or Catalina dressing. Roll your cut fish chunks in the dressing to coat liberally. Sprinkle the coated pieces with some real Bacon bits. Carefully turn the cut fillets with a fork and cook over a medium heat until the fillets flake apart. It cooks fast and make sure you don’t over cook. it. Like I said if the pieces flake fully apart with the fork that you’re turning them with, you are done. Then serve over my very favorite Basmati white rice. To die for! Then one other trick we often use is to add small raw frozen Shrimp to the fish and cook that along with the Walleyes. It adds even more flavor and helps stretch the dish if you have more people to serve. We really like the small frozen peeled and deveined Shrimp that Walmart sells. Try this dish and you can all thank me later! Oh, and the leftovers are fabulous the next day as well! Mmmmmm! |
