June the 1st! Wow! And just like that, we are starting our second month in the water here in Ashtabula Ohio. And while we aboard The Trophy have been very busy running trips daily now there still has not been much sign of life from any of the other boaters. Especially the other charters! As I mentioned in my last report I was only aware of one other charter that ran 2 trips this past month and I haven’t even seen that boat back out again. Maybe some other boat or two from upriver may have ran something that I am not aware of but I know for a fact that no other charters from my marina have been running any trips. What the heck is going on here! |

If they only knew how hot the fishing really is right now they would all kick themselves. It literally is as good as it gets! Water temps are now hovering just shy of 60 degrees and fish are pouring into the area by the groves. The marks on the fish finder are insane everywhere I've gone here in the last couple of weeks and you just can not keep a line in the water once you start fishing. The Walleyes are stacked thick and they are HUNGRY! In a bit of defense for many of the other boaters, it was not a very pleasant May. I’m trying really hard not to complain too much about it myself but man we had our share of cool raw weather with plenty of wind and rain. It kind of sucked to be honest about it but hey, the Walleye didn't much care! Ha! |

So in my last report I kind of skipped over the techniques that we have been employing aboard The Trophy thus far. No big secret. Simply early season set ups for Lake Erie that are used everywhere on the lake. The big planer boards sent way out on both sides of the boat to get to the quiet undisturbed water. Then multiple lines on both sides of the boards using the #40 Jet Divers and the small Scorpion Stinger Spoons in bright flashy colors. And the Walleyes have been snatching them up like candy as fast as we can set lines! We've had no time or need to run any Dipsy Divers or Down Riggers although I'm absolutely certain that they would work as well! There are just sooooooo many fish out there right now. The fish are all bunched up closer to shore too. I’m sure as they begin to filter out to the deeper cooler waters in the coming months that it will spread them out and thin them out some but for now it’s just ridiculous! |

Now that it is June I’m sure my own private lake privileges that I have been enjoying and had gotten used to for a month now will all come to a screeching end. With about 50 other charters in the harbor nowadays and the kids getting out of school and other people taking their vacations in the summer fishing pressure will most definitely pick up. But hey that’s OK. There’s plenty of room out there and more then enough fish to go around. All I got to say to all my fellow angler friends is COME GET YOU SOME! It’s really, really good! Capt.
