Almost the middle of June already. At least by weeks end that is. Why do I get the feeling that this season is going to just scream by! Aboard THE Trophy, we keep sticking our nose further and further out into the lake searching for the larger schools of larger fish. So far there hasn’t been anywhere that I have gone where we don’t catch plenty of Walleyes. They are everywhere! Unfortunately the size could be a little bigger on average. Not that we don’t get a few good ones everyday. But on average, right now most fish that are making it into our buckets are between 15” and 20” inches. You'll hear this a lot this year unless something changes here soon... “good eaters!” Lol! It is what it is. Take what the lake gives you and be happy that the action is good!

I think you can blame Mother Nature for all of the record huge Walleye hatches that we have been having now year after year these last 6 or 7 years. There are just soooooooo many fish in the lake right now that it is almost ridiculous. And like a pond that has too many Blue Gills, when the population gets so saturated, the average size suffers. I think we are finally there. I think that there is just too many Walleyes in the lake right now. And I can’t help but think that this all may have something to do with the lack of the Yellow Perch that we are coincidently experiencing right now as the Walleye population explodes. All these Walleyes have to eat something. Here is a picture of some Perch inside a Walleye I kept and cleaned for dinner for myself a couple of weeks ago. You can see clearly that they are Perch. But I think the real harm to the Perch population is when they are first hatched and are tiny tiny fish. I think these 100 million plus Walleyes that we have in the lake right now just gorge themselves silly on these little guys. At least that’s my personal theory about it all.

Otherwise things are going very well. We are still on a Tru Trip Jet Diver program off of the big planer boards. I’ve gone to larger spoons off of the Jets to try and discourage some of the smaller fish from grabbing the lures so easily but it really doesn’t seem to make any difference. We are also getting plenty of sub legal throw back Walleyes (under 15” inches) but knock on wood, so far not quite as bad as it was at times last year or the year before. Seems like I’ve been complaining about mass amounts of throw back Walleyes for years now. And again coincidently right along with all of these back to back record Walleye hatches. I guess the future looks very bright for these young captains for years to come but I know this old guy is getting pretty tired of working this hard everyday sorting thru this many small Walleyes. Deep sigh.

So with the progression of summer we will slowly work into a more serious deep water program focusing more on the Dipsy Divers and Downriggers as we continue to go out even further and further. I fully expect to run into larger fish including our friends, the explosive elusive Steelhead Trout. This is the first summer in memory where we have yet to catch our first Trout of the season aboard THE TROPHY. We did have one on and almost had it to the boat but it escaped us just shy of the net. Kind of a weird year as far as that goes but I’m sure they are coming and I’m not really complaining. Ha! Come to think of it, we haven’t really caught much of anything else like the White Bass or Sheephead. Maybe the Walleyes ate all of them too! Lol! I don’t think we’ll be that lucky though! We shall see. Weather so far this summer has been pretty decent thus far for all of us too. Hopefully that trend will continue on as well. All good so far. We get a little more size on these keeper Walleyes, things will teeter to the really good end of the fishing meter for me. One can only hope! Stay tuned...
