Walleye Week 09/11/09

WALLEYE:

Dakota Smith of Rural Valley, Pa caught his Angler Award Walleye while he was out Perching. It was 7 pounds 9 ½ ounces. It was 27 ½ inches long and had a girth of 16 inches. He caught it on a Golden Shiner minnow out in 70 ft of water straight out of Walnut Creek.

Jake Allison from Ligonier, Pa brought in a 9 pound 6 ounce Walleye. It was 31 ½ inches long and had a girth of 17 inches. He caught it out in 60-65 ft of water in the First Trench a little west of Walnut Creek. It was caught on a Reef Runner and the color was Purple.

Eleven year old Alex Takacs from Clinton, Pa brought in a 9 pound 8 ounce Walleye, It is 29 inches long with a girth of 17 ½ inches. He caught it out in 100 ft of water off the mountain. He launched from North East Marina. He was using a worm harness. His color was Chartreuse/Purple.

Husband and Wife Erica and Brian Shaffer of East Berlin, PA brought in a couple of the limit of Walleye they caught. Erica’s was 9 pounds 4 ½ ounces, 30 inches long with a girth of 18 ¾ inches. Brian’s was 8 pounds 14 ½ ounces, 31 inches long and a girth of 17 ¼ inches. They both caught them out in 75 ft of water in the Second Trench west of Walnut Creek. They were using Renowsky Deep Divers.

PERCH:

The Perch are hard to come by. Most boaters are going out in 65 ft of water to find them. A lot have stopped fishing for them and now go out for Walleye. They are catching Perch while fishing for Walleye too.

STEELHEAD:

I have had quite a few people ask me about the Steelhead. We had a few “stragglers” come in. There have been a few caught though I personally think it is a bit early yet.

I know a lot of people take their vacations for Steelhead season. I want them to catch some fish and have a good time, that is why I will tell them most often the best time to catch them is starting the middle of October. That way there are enough fish that have come in that I can just about guarantee a catch. I also haven’t seen them jumping in front of the creek yet and that is another sign.

The water temperature at this writing is 72 degrees and we have not had any cold rain yet so the creek is low.
