Fishing report for the week of August 28, 2011.

Junk, junk and more junk fish ! It was a particularly brutal week with the weather as well this past week. "The Trophy" got sidelined 4 out of the last 7 days because of high winds. You would have to go back clear to this springs lousy weather to find a week where we lost that many trips in the same week. Such is the business. But a little bit of good has come from some of these relentless windy days. It appears that a lot of the Walleyes have been pushed back south again. Right into the zone where the heaviest concentrations of crap fish lurk. We have been getting our Walleyes but have been paying a high price by having to weed thru many many Sheephead, White Perch, White Bass and even Yellow Perch. The Yellows aren't exactly junk but when you're dragging around a Perch on a Dipsy Diver that you don't know how long it's been on there or have to drag one in from 400 foot out just to clear it so you can get the lure back into the game, that's exactly what they become to me. A nuisance junk fish...

In an effort to get down deeper with out having to put out as much line, I have made the switch here lately from the Jr. Deep Diver Thunder Sticks to the full sized Deep Divers. I believe this is helping a little bit on cutting down at least some of the really small junk fish as well even though they still try to eat them. It's just not as easy for them to get this larger bait with the bigger hooks in to their smaller mouths. Still, it is amazing how many little fish half the size of the bait sometimes manage to get hooked up. It must really be a cruel world down there to be a small fish. Always having to look over your shoulder just to make sure you're not about to get ate. And then it happens anyway ! YIKES ! lol !

We are still catching the occasional Steelhead each week but not all that many. There for a good while we seemed to be hooking at least one everyday but it's really quieted down now to maybe just one or two a week. A far cry from just a few years ago where we sometimes had even more Steelhead then Walleye on some days. Talk about a "nuisance" I didn't like that either ! I think I still got rods and reels laying around somewhere all busted up from those years ! lol !

So I have today off thanks to hurricane Irene. Hard to believe that something that far away can effect our weather but it almost always does. We are getting the wrap around winds and today there is a ugly northeaster blowing out there shutting down all thoughts of getting out regardless of how big your boat is or how hearty you are. The good news is that it is supposed to drop right off tonight and tomorrow, Monday is supposed to be a nice calm day. We'll see... Anyway, I am not as tired typing up this weeks report and not doing it late at night like I usually have to all cross eyed. It's a good feeling ! And so far, my computer hasn't crashed ( yet ) as I am doing this, although it has been still happening from time to time all week. The dreaded blue screen and all the crap error messages that go with it and having to re-start everything, yada yada, yada... Gotta love this stuff. Well, that's it for this week. Hard to believe that by next weeks report, we will already be well into September. It's going fast now ! CYA in September !

Capt. Walt

OK, It's that time of year where we have to start rolling our departure time back a little bit because the days are staying dark so much longer. Rather then leave right at 5:00 a.m., I am now telling everyone that we are pulling out at 5:30am. You still should be at the marina by 5:15 to get loaded up so we can be ready to roll by the desired time. I myself will still continue to be at the boat right around 5ish for now as always. And for those that still don't know it, there are no fishing licenses at the marina. You need to get those ahead of time. Call me if you have any questions or concerns.
