Walleye and Perch: First Week of July 2003

Walnut Creek Fishing: First Week of July 2003

The week began with an evening of catching more of those large jumbo perch near shore. Golden shiners were the best bait for these jumbos in 25 to 30 feet. Purchased at Hansen's Bait Stand 814-838-1642 at the beginning of Presque Isle

Walleye fishing was the main attraction and the best bite was the 58300 area 62 feet water depth.

Worm harness was the bait of choice.

Watermelon, black and purple worked well.

Many large walleye have been in the cooler all week.

Each day the fish seemed to move a little more to the east and lower in the water table.

Wednesday a 11.25 pound walleye made the cooler after an exciting fight, diving and shaking his head for freedom never realized.

Some fish are long and skinny.

Most are the good eaters 20 to 25 inches.

Thursday started out perch fishing. The bite was slow for most. Although a few boats limited early.
Zack and Cathy caught 32 perch before we spent the second half walleye fishing. Fished just north of the perch pack 375 to 390. Cathy always seems to catch the big walleye.

Zack caught the eaters as they ended up with 8 walleye and all those perch for some good eating.

The 4th started with a nasty thunder storm that chased most boats to give up the day. This days trip was scheduled for a late start giving us a near boatless lake. The lake was 2 to 4 from the west and the fish were biting. Andrea caught the big one before Bob and her had all their lines in the water. Perch and walleye both were hitting the worm harness

The week ended back on those large jumbo perch. Julian pulled in a 14 inch perch on a large golden minnow purchased from BAC Bait Shop, Fairview, 98 and Route 5, 814-474-3992. Not a golden shiner just a large golden minnow about 4 to 4.5 inches long.

The kids had a great time catching those jumbo perch. 25 to 30 feet depth was hot but the fish wanted those large golden minnows. The south west breeze drifted us a long time in the right depth making the fish easy to find. All the kids ended up with Angler Awards and a good fish fry.
