West Erie County, DWCO Randy Leighton, rglerie@msn.com

Conditions:

With very little precipitation, West County tributary conditions are low and very clear. The mild spring temperatures we have enjoyed have given way to a heavy upstream sucker migration. There have been some fresh steelhead moving in, but have remained mostly in the lower stretches and just off shore. Presque Isle Bay is rapidly becoming the hot spot for perch and crappie with a good number of boats out this past weekend and anglers wading the Bay shoreline at Presque Isle targeting slab crappie. The fair weather has had anglers dotting the Erie City side of the Bayfront and the North and South Piers. Current Lake Erie water temperature off Toledo is 78 degrees, off Cleveland, 41 degrees and off the Port of Erie, 41 degrees i. Current West County tributary conditions as of Tuesday afternoon were low and very clear with some flow.

Elk Valley Sportsmen's Annual Club Kids Fishing Derby:
The Elk Valley Sportsmen's Association will be holding its annual fishing derby for kids 12 and under at the Girard Boro Park pond on Saturday, May 1st. Kickoff is at 1:00 PM till 3:00 PM with great prizes and refreshments for the kids. This is a terrific event for the kids (and great entertainment for the parents) and is always well attended. This is a great introduction to fishing for the youngsters. Get there early for that "hot spot". Any child 12 years of age or younger is welcome to join in the fun. Fishing gear and help is available for those kids in need and refreshments for the kids are provided. Club members and PFBC officers are always on hand to help out. To get the Girard Boro Park turn north on Route 18 in Girard. Turn left on Lake street go several blocks and turn left at the Park Entrance (Lake Street). The pond is at the bottom of the hill. This is one of the most popular area fishing events of the season with plenty of fish to be caught..... don't miss it.

Trophy Bass Season on Lake Erie and the Tributaries and Presque Isle Bay:
Trophy Bass Season on Lake Erie and its Tributaries and Presque Isle Bay begins April 17th and runs through June 11th. The minimum size limit during this season is 20 inches with a creel limit of 1 fish. Regular bass season for the these areas ,begins June 12th and runs through December 31st. with a minimum size limit of 15 inches and a creel limit of 4 fish. A good number of "bass" boats have been observed on Presque Isle Bay the past few weekends although we have no reports of strong activity yet.

Walleye Reminder:
Walleye season on Lake Erie, its tributaries, and Presque Isle bay is currently closed and will reopen again May 1st through Dec. 31st. Creel limit will be 6 fish with a minimum size of 15"

Take Care Of The Steelhead Smolts:
Steelhead smolts look like small rainbows and are often mistaken for stocked trout. They are typically smaller then the "stockies" and should be carefully released. They hold the future of Steelhead fishing in our area. If a Steelhead smolt is hooked, reel it in quickly without over stressing the fish. Gently release the smolt as quickly as you can keeping it in the water as much as possible. If the hook is swallowed it is generally best to just cut the line and release the fish for the best chance of survival.
