Conditions:
In a typical turn for this time of year the Perch fishing has picked up dramatically and the walleye fishing has slowed down a bit. Many limits of walleye are still being brought in although it is taking a bit longer to get them in the deeper water. Catch rates are still good with many 8 to 9 lb fish brought in. Perch catches seem to be on the increase with the schools holding in 70' of water off the point at Presque Isle and due north of Walnut Creek in to 62 to 65 feet of water. Perch limit are still common with jumbos over 2 pounds occasionally brought in. (2 LB 9 OZ is the state record). The "perch packs" off the Point and north of Walnut Creek were large this past weekend. An unbelievable number of boats were clustered north of the Conneaut, Ohio harbor in 70' feet of water. Some steelhead are being picked up off shore and evidence of "staging" is apparent in 40 to 50 feet of water. There have been a few confirmed reports of steelhead being caught off the wall at Walnut Creek and a few Browns caught along the shoreline at Trout Run. Air and water temperatures are a too warm at this time so support any real activity. How ever, with a few cool nights and a little rain (that shouldn't be a problem in Erie) it won't be long. Lake Erie Water Temperature off Toledo is 71 degrees, off Cleveland, 70 degrees, and off Erie, 72 degrees. The Erie Tributaries are still at "summer levels", very low and very clear.

Another Reminder Regarding Staying Overnight At the Walnut Creek Access: With the peak of walleye and perch fishing overlapping the beginning of steelhead season the Erie area can be very busy with anglers having a wide variety of fishing opportunities. Both boaters and anglers should be aware that camping on Fish and Boat Commission property is unlawful. Access areas include -- Walnut Creek Access Area, Elk Creek Access Area, Sterittania Access Area, Fairview Gravel Pits, North East Access Area and Eaton Reservoir

Section 741 (a) Regulation 53.2 (a)
It is unlawful for a person to camp overnight on or in Commission-owned or controlled property or waters, to erect a tent or other device used for, or capable of being used for cooking or sleeping, or to build or maintain open fires on such property.

You are in violation of this section if you are sleeping in a vehicle, camper, boat, or motor home on PA Fish and Boat Commission property.

Please make other accommodations for overnight stays while fishing or boating. Any questions can be directed to the Erie WCO's or to the PA Fish and Boat Commission, Bureau of Law Enforcement, Northwest Region Office at (814) 337-0444.

Law Enforcement: A good number of anglers on Lake Erie have been apprehended using more than the allowable 2 rods per person over the last couple of weeks. Anglers violating this regulation are subject hefty fines and costs along with possible confiscation of all fish and the equipment in violation.

Sunrise is coming later and sunset is coming early as we head into the later part of 2008. Boaters are reminded to display proper navigational lights between the hours of sunset and sunrise as well as during periods of restricted visibility.
