April 16th, 2008 West Erie County, DWCO Randy Leighton, WCO Brook Tolbert Conditions: The opening day of the regular trout season for our area was a great one with typical Erie weather conditions in the 50s, windy and a little rain. The reasonable weather brought out the crowds. The new access areas at Rick Road and Sterrettania road were popular and the additional parking these areas provided along Elk Creek were welcomed. Anglers did well with a mix of stockies, steelhead and the occasional sucker. There are still steelhead in the tribs, but they are beginning to thin out. Good steelhead fishing can still be found along the Lake Shore at Trout Run, the access area on the west side of Elk Creek, and in the pools on lower Walnut Creek. Boats have been taking to the bay and doing some trolling off trout run. There are still a fair number of steelhead in the Bay. Crappie fishing on Presque Isle Bay has been hot and is nearing the peak. Current Lake Erie Water temperatures off Toledo are 47 degrees, off Cleveland, 39 degrees and off the Port of Erie, 40 degrees. Walnut Creek Access Information: The Walnut Creek Access Office is open weekends, April 18th, 19th, 20th, April 25th, 26th, 27th, and May 2nd, 7:00 AM to 5:30 PM. Regular season hours begin on May 3rd. Regular season hours are Monday through Thursday, 8:00 AM to 6:30 PM, Fridays and Saturdays, 6:00 AM to 10:00 PM, and Sundays 6:00 AM to 8:00 PM. The office offers licenses, information, loaner tackle, most all PFBC publications, snacks and beverages and restroom facilities. The launch ramps are in at the Walnut Creek Access with channel dredging near complete. Elk Valley Sportsmen's Annual Club Kids Fishing Derby: The Elk Valley Sportsmen's Association will be holding its annual fishing derby for kids 12 and under at the Girard Boro Park pond on Saturday, May 4th. Kickoff is at 1:00 PM till 3:00 PM with great prizes and refreshments for the kids. This is a terrific event for the kids (and great entertainment for the parents) and is always well attended. This is a great introduction to fishing for the youngsters. Get there early for that "hot spot". Any child 12 years of age or younger is welcome to join in the fun. Fishing gear and help is available for those kids in need and refreshments for the kids are provided. Club members and PFBC officers are always on hand to help out. To get the Girard Boro Park turn north on Route 18 in Girard. Turn left on Lake street go several blocks and turn left at the Park Entrance (Lake Street). The pond is at the bottom of the hill. This is one of the most popular area fishing events of the season with plenty of fish to be caught..... don't miss it. Another PFBC Basic Boating Course Offered: Trout and Salmon for Lake Erie, Presque Isle Bay and the Tributaries: Trout and Salmon regulations changed on April 12th for Lake Erie and its tribs.
