February 13th, 2008

West Erie County, DWCO Randy Leighton, WCO Brook Tolbert

Conditions:

The Erie are weather has had more ups and downs than the new Ravine Flyer II roller coaster at Waldameer Park. Mild temperatures and open water has given way to a deep freeze over the last several days. A good blanket of snow covered the area as of late Tuesday afternoon. Area tribs are nearly frozen over again with only the fastest flowing water remaining open. Presque Isle Bay has frozen over again although at this point the ice is very rough from high winds and should be considered unstable. Considerable drifting ice has reformed over Lake Erie again. In short we are in that transition period from soft water to safe hard water fishing. Cold temperatures forecast for the remainder of the week may bring solid ice by the weekend.

Support Your Local Sportsmens Clubs:
The PA Steelhead Association will have its monthly meeting beginning at 7 p.m. on Wednesday, February 13th, 2008 at the American Legion Post 773 at 4109 West 12th Street in Erie. This is on the south side of West 12th Street (State Route 5), just east of the Erie Airport. The club will be accepting nominations for officers at this month's meeting. The public is welcome.

Annual Sons Ice Fishing Clinic:
The Sons of Lake Erie will be conducting their annual ice fishing clinic at the Waterworks Pond at Presque Isle State Park on Saturday February 16th. This annual event is a great introduction to ice fishing with a chance to try your luck. The SONS provide the gear and bait with plenty of refreshments. If the forecasts hold up, conditions should be good for this event

Ice Fishing Equipment Reminder:
It is unlawful while ice fishing to use more than five fishing devices, which may consist of rods, hand lines, tip-ups, or any combination. Each device shall contain a single fishing line with no more than three hooks attached to each line. Holes cut in ice may not exceed 10 inches between the farthest points as measured in any direction. All lines, rods, or tip-ups shall be under the immediate control of the person using them. On Fish & Boat Commission lakes, shelters, or shanties must be removed when through fishing for the day.

Walnut Creek Fishing Hours Change, Effective Immediately:
From September 2nd until the opening day of trout season in April, all Lake Erie tributary streams are closed to fishing from 10 p.m. until 5 a.m. on the following day except for Walnut Creek, north of the Manchester Bridge
and Elk Creek north of Route 5.
The Important change here is that Walnut Creek specifically and effective immediately, is now closed to fishing south of the Manchester Bridge between the hours of 10 p.m. until 5 a.m. the following day through the opening day
of Trout Season. Anglers should be aware that this now an enforceable regulation
