WEST ERIE COUNTY, DWCO Randy Leighton, WCO Brook Tolbert

Conditions:

Steelhead season is off to a pretty disappointing start with the tribs low and clear and very few fish. Very small numbers of fish are being caught at night and dawn along the Walnut Creek wall and only a few have been caught upstream to the Manchester hole. Anglers were observed this past Sunday lined up south of the Manchester hole in the “chutes” area with only a handful of fish to be caught. The area has had very little rainfall and ambient temperatures are still warm for this time of year. Elk Creek is in a similar state with low clear conditions and only but a few unconfirmed reports of steelhead activity near the mouth. Anglers trying their luck at the mouth of Trout Run have caught a few, but no big numbers although staging evidence is strong. The flow diversion created just south of the stop sign hole has been working well and created and additional large pool. With some additional rain, this pool should become another "hot spot" on the Walnut Creek Project Waters.

On the bright side, Perch fishing is still fair to good and decent numbers of Walleye are still being brought in. Perching is still worth a try north of Walnut and North of the Point on Presque Isle.

Walnut Creek Access Dredging:

Boaters are advised that the channel at Walnut Creek entering and exiting Lake Erie is closed to boat traffic to accommodate much needed dredging. Wind and waves have slowed progress somewhat, although work is scheduled for completion on Thursday of this week with the channel and launch ramps scheduled to reopen on Friday. Work status and more information on completion can be obtained by calling the Walnut Creek Access Office at 814-833-2464

Walnut Creek Sunset Garden Wall Update for September 2005:

I hope you all have enjoyed how pretty the garden has looked this year and stopped for a minute to see how many pavers

have memorials or recognitions on them. I'll bet you know many of the names! I have close to a dozen new paver orders

which will be engraved in the next month.

Christmas is coming, and anniversaries and birthdays will be coming up between now and next Spring. If you are at a loss as to what to buy for that special someone or if you have suffered the loss of someone close to you – think about a paver or a capstone on the wall as a timely and caring gift or memorial.

Still available are both the 8x8 and 4x8 pavers and some of the capstones on all 4 sides of the wall. The 8 x 8's are $100, the 4 x 8's are $50 and the capstones range in price from $400 to $275. All the proceeds from the sales of the pavers and capstones go into the fund at the Erie Community Foundation so that the garden and wall may be maintained into perpetuity for all who come to visit the Marina now and into the future.

If you want to place an order for any of the above – please contact me right away, or pick up a brochure with the order blank at the Walnut Creek Access Area Office. All orders received after this fall's engraving will be done in the late Spring.
