WEST ERIE COUNTY, DWCO Randy Leighton, WCO Brook Tolbert Conditions: Meltdown continues around the area with nearly all the the tributaries open and running. Recent rain along with slightly warmer temperatures have brought some fresh fish in but no big numbers reported at this time. Water levels are high around the access areas and targeting these areas for fresh fish may be worthwhile. With additional rain and warmer temperatures through out the week, we could see some additional steelhead movement. Fair catches can be found upstream on most of the tribs typically south of route 5 up and beyond Route 20. A few hearty anglers were found fishing the open water in the Erie channel between Presque Isle Bay and Lake Erie. This is a good time of to target Burbot from both the North and South piers along the channel. Ice on Presque Isle Bay is melting fast with reports on Tuesday of a few inches to 7 or so inches of soft unstable ice with considerable slush and water. Anglers are advised that ice conditions are varied and are now considered unsafe per the Coast Guard. There have been a number of reported fall throughs on Presque Isle Bay this week. Rain and warm daytime temperatures this week may bring the hardwater season to an end by the weekend. On the bright side, ice out typically means the beginning of an abundance of slab crappie in and around Presque Isle Bay. Current Lake Erie water temperature as of this writing is 33 degrees. Current tributary conditions as of this writing are high and flowing with good color. Perch Size Reminder: The minimum size for Perch for Lake Erie and Presque Isle Bay changes form 7" to 8" effective April 1st. The limit of 20 fish per day remains the same. Millcreek Mall to Improve Litter Control Along Walnut Creek: At the request of the President Jerry Skrypsak and the SONS of Lake Erie, the Cafaro Company, owners of the Millcreek Mall, have agreed to plan to improve the prevention of litter entering Walnut Creek from the Milcreek Mall Parking area. The company made a quick response and is eager to help improve the situation. Walnut Creek runs along the South side of the Millcreek Mall and is often a catch basin for parking lot debris and litter. Much of this debris easily reaches Lake Erie. The plan is to include improved fencing to better retain litter along with a better schedule by Mall maintenance crews to police the area on a more regular basis. 2005 Great Pennsylvania Clean up, What's Happening Locally: April 23rd will be the day of the 2005 Great Pennsylvania Clean Up. greatpacleanup: Great PA Cleanup Home Page Many Erie area clubs are helping to support this event. Of particular interest to local anglers is the clean up effort sponsored by the Pennsylvania Steelhead Association. The Association will be holding their annual cleanup drive to coincide with the Statewide event. Their efforts will concentrate on litter collection along the area tributaries, an effort that will not only contribute to the beautification of the area but will go along way in promoting good land owner relations and future public access. The meeting places will be Walnut Creek Office and Poor Richard's East for those interested in concentrating on the tributary streams. Bags, gloves and containers will be provided. Those interested in helping out, are asked to meet at either of these two locations by 10:00 am, Saturday, April 23rd. What a great opportunity to be part of the solution.
