WEST ERIE COUNTY, DWCO Randy Leighton, WCO Brook Tolbert Conditions: With a mix of daytime temperatures along with some rain, the area has seen some additional ice melt off. There is a good amount of open water on the tribs with levels on the high side. Shiners are popular in these conditions along with tipped micro jigs and brighter colored egg and sucker spawn patterns. Darker water and faster conditions will allow anglers to use heavier line and added splitshot to balance out a natural drift rig. Fresh fish have been scattered with good numbers of darkened hold over fish to be found. Ice fishing is still going strong on Presque Isle Bay with bluegills and crappie being plentiful and easily caught. Ice huts were dotted across the Bay as far as the eye could see. Bay ice this past weekend was varied at 5 to 7". Anglers using small shiners were catching trout at the Waterworks Ponds on Presque Isle this past weekend. A few hardy individuals braved the ice at Trout Run jigging for Steelhead with good success. Tributary conditions as of this writing were high and flowing with good color and little ice. Lake Erie water temperature as of this writing is 33 degrees with ice along the shoreline. Erie Outdoor Show Reminder: The annual Erie Outdoor Sport and Travel Expo will be held March 4th through the 6th at the Family First Sports Park, 8155 Oliver Road in Erie (I-90 at Peach Street, Exit 24). This is the largest event of its kind in this area that provides a much needed break to the winter cabin fever. The expo is a great mix of the latest in hunting and fishing information and gear blended with exhibits by local clubs, bait shops and sport and travel stores as well as numerous charter and guide services. Great buys, informative demonstration clinics, and mouth watering goodies round out the expo. Area officers and representatives from the Pennsylvania Fish and Boat Commission as always will be on hand through out the weekend with the latest information and to answer questions and listen to your comments. This year's show promises to be bigger and better than ever. See you there..... Anglers Fishing the Shoreline at Trout Run: With ice formed along the lake shore and the tributary open, it can be difficult to tell where the tributary ends and the lake begins. Fishing in the Trout Run trib (State controlled nursery waters) is prohibited. Generally any running or riffled water can be considered part of the tributary. If in doubt, don/t take the risk as fines for fishing or disturbing State nursery waters can be expensive. Support Your Local Sportsmen's Clubs: The SONS of Lake Erie have their regular monthly meeting on Monday, February 28, 2005 at 7:30 p.m. at the East Erie Turners, 9th and Parade Streets in Erie.
