WESTERN ERIE COUNTY, DWCO Randy Leighton Conditions: Some thawing has occurred on the area tributaries, how ever the little water that is exposed is mostly fast moving and holding few if any fish. A number of limits taken through the ice at both the Walnut Creek Access and near the access at Elk Creek. Anglers were observed ice fishing along the shore at Trout Run next to open water in what appeared to be very unstable conditions. A few catches were observed, however anglers should use extreme caution in this area. Conditions have not changed a lot on Presque Isle Bay. The majority of anglers are having a tough time locating the larger perch although the sheer numbers of smaller fish seem to be keeping everyone busy. Good catches of gills and other pan fish are still being pulled through the ice at Misery Bay. With temperatures hovering around freezing during the day, Ice conditions have been reported anywhere from 7” to as thick as 16” on Presque Isle Bay. IMPORTANT - License Increase / Merger Meeting: Area Officers will be on hand at tonight’s (Wednesday February 11th) Pennsylvania Steelhead Association Meeting to bring area sportsmen up to date on the latest information regarding license increase and merger proposals. These proposals will have direct and possibly permanent impact on you the sportsman. The proposed merger, if approved, will likely have many adverse effects on the fishing, boating and hunting community. This is a great opportunity to find out how these issues will affect you as well as generations to come. It is also an opportunity to find out what you can do about it. Other area clubs have been invited to tonight’s meeting and the general public is invited as well. The meeting starts at 7:00 PM in the upstairs banquet room at the Elk Creek Inn on Sterritania road. Regulation Change: A change in regulation regarding ice fishing tackle is effective this month. Current regulations dictate only 2 rods or hand lines in combination with 3 tip ups. With the latest technology making it sometimes difficult to distinguish a tip up from a rod, the PFBC has elected to eliminate the combo regulation and permit up to five legal devices of any type, rods or tip ups.
