WESTERN ERIE COUNTY, DWCO Randy Leighton

Conditions:
Between the wind and the waves, fishing continues to be good. Ramp checks this past weekend at the Walnut Creek Access Launch revealed good catches of walleye and perch. Nearly every boat checked that was out to fish brought at least a few walleye in and a number of limits were observed as well. Anglers trolling for Walleye have been picking up large perch and there were actually a few comments that the perch were getting in the way of the walleye fishing. (Would never have expected to hear that one). Walleye action this past week has been good in 62-63' of water northwest of Walnut Creek. The perch have been schooled up due north of Walnut Creek in 55-65' of water.

Law Enforcement:
A cooperative effort by the USCG and the PFBC this past weekend revealed a number of safety equipment violations by boaters coming into the Walnut Creek Access launch. Typical violations included insufficient PFDs, unserviceable PFDs, lack of or unserviceable fire extinguishers, and lack of, or expired visual distress signals (flares). In light of the number of boating accidents this summer, boaters in our area should have an enlightened awareness of the importance of required safety equipment. This past Monday sent WCO's Tolbert and Edwards out of Walnut Creek in search of three individuals clinging to an overturned boat. Having the proper visual distress signals on board and using them enabled our officers to rescue the men within 30 minutes. Although we may seem redundent in emphasizing and educating boaters on the importance of having the proper safety equipment, there are always those boaters that either dont take the time to learn what equipment they need or do not understand their importance. 5 miles out on Lake Erie in rough water is unfortunately not the time to learn.
