Western Erie County: The annual Kid's Fishing Derby at Girard Boro Pond is this Saturday / May 5th at noon sponsored by the Elk Valley Sportsmen's Club. For children under 12 years of age. Western Crawford County ... WCO Joe Russell (fishcop16@hotmail.com) The warm weather has brought a drastic increase in fish moving to shallower water and thus making shore fishing better. The bass, perch, and crappies have really turned on with 9" to 12" crappies being the norm, and 3 and 4 pound large mouths not out of the ordinary. The key to success with them though seems to be find back bays and someplace with structures (trees or stumps),Jigs and top water lures have really been producing, as well as live bait.
The walleye fishing still hasn't slowed down yet with large numbers being caught from boats this weekend, people have been throwing the 15 inchers back because the year class this year has been so big that they don't want to keep the small legal ones. During the day the lucky fishermen seem to be drifting worms or minnies in conjunction with jigs and doing better in deeper water, shore fishermen are doing well though to so don't get discouraged if you don't have a boat. Musky fishing has started to pick up with more of them being caught by shore fishermen recently, live bait seems to be the key with these voracious eaters and the bigger the bait the better-several 34 inchers have been taken that I have seen. As of today 5/1/01 not a lot of activity on Conneaut Lake, the water temp is still in the 40's and not a lot of active feeding is going on. Some really small bluegills have been caught in the back waters but that is about it. Pymatuming is still the best for fishing in this area, with water temps this last weekend reaching mid 50's As of Monday there were still trout to be had in Conneaut Creek with some excellent fishing possibilities with an ultra-light or fly rod, I have heard several steelhead were taken in the Western area but I didn't get a chance to see them. __________________
