Erie Weather… March is a tough month to plan fishing trips for. In the same day you can go from sunshine & 50 degree temps to freezing rain & snow. The tributaries fluctuating levels are measured in feet and by minutes. Shoreline will be ice packed to clear in an hour and everyone knows that the Lake can go from flat to 10' waves in 20 minutes. The trick is to have an alternative plan if the weather goes bad. High muddy tributaries on the West Side of the county only require a change of bait & tactics. Fish will hug the nearshore areas to escape the current. Scented baits are a must at these times. Higher ends of the tribs are less turbid from runoff & East Side tribs have short rocky bottoms with shorter watersheds. A quick check with local bait shops or officers will get you headed in the right direction and not make your entire weekend a washout.Fishing report… Fresh Jacks are being caught on jigs this week in the Walnut Creek Boat Basin averaging 22". Large males are being taken in the Streuchen Flats area upstream to I-79. Walnut is showing very few fish at the upper ends with Rt. 5 north remaining the best location. Northerns were being caught at the head of Marina Lake on Presque Isle Park. No success was noted on Yellow Perch this week from the shoreline. Avonia Beach continues to be one of the most productive fishing spots when the weather permits. Nursery Water Violations … A busy weekend for officers with 3 citations issued for attempting to take fish from nursery waters, 1 citation for use of a landing net to take fish, and 5 citations for littering. Like the return of the Robins… it must be a sign of Spring.
