Much needed rain is expected this week. This should help bring the area tributaries back up to more normal levels and boost fishing activity. The marina basin at Walnut Creek is now open for fishing. Boat and launch docks have been removed. The basin is boiling with steelhead and fishing action should be great. Expect crowded conditions and remember all rules and regulations will apply. Courtesy and patience with less experienced anglers will be appreciated and remember to please clean up your area when you leave. The Walnut Creek Access Office is currently being remodeled. Office areas will remain open however, restroom facilities are temporarily closed until the building is completed. Portable facilities are available at the North and south ends of the main parking area. Winter office hours are Monday - Thursday 8:00 a.m. to 6:30 p.m. and Friday - Sunday 6:00 a.m. - 8:00 p.m. Schools of perch are still scattered through out Presque Isle Bay and activity has been good. Some crappie are being caught along with the perch. Emerald shiners on a weighted 2 hook crappie or perch rig are the ticket. Fish the rig close to the bottom. Steelhead have moved up in Crooked Creek if you are looking for more elbow room and less congestion. Watch for posted nursery waters on the North end of Crooked creek. Fishing in any Commonwealth nursery waters is prohibited. Steelhead are easily spooked with the low clear conditions we have now and many anglers are dropping down as low as 2# test line to increase their steelhead success. Playing a fish on 2# line takes patience, skill, and a wide open drag. Often a fish has to be overplayed on such light line. If you choose to use this technique and plan on releasing your catch, take extra care in putting the fish back. The longer the fish is played, the less chance of survival upon release. When releasing the fish, do not put your fingers in the gill area and try to insure the fish can stay upright on its own. Water Conservation Officer John Bowser underwent heart bypass surgery this past Monday and has begun the recovery process. He did remarkably well and is already up and about. His fellow officers as well as the area fishing and boating community wish him a safe and full recovery. Cards and well wishes can be sent to PA Fish and Boat Commission, PO Box 43, Fairview, PA. 16415 or emailed to Jwb014@aol.com Fishing or law enforcement questions may be directed to me at Rglerie@aol.com Randy Leighton Deputy Water Conservation Officer, PA.
