This would include conventional water-skis, tubes aquaplanes, kneeboards, air mattresses, parasails, kite skis and other similar devices. Regulations for water-ski activities include the following: 1) It is unlawful for a person to operate a boat on Commonwealth waters for water-skiing unless each person being towed is wearing a Type I, II, III, or V Coast guard approved PFD. "Ski belts" and inflatable PFDs are not acceptable. 2) Water-skiing is permitted only between the hours of sunrise and sunset. 3) It is unlawful for a person to operate a boat on Commonwealth waters pulling a water-skier without having at least one additional competent observer on board. The observer must be seated in a position to effectively observe the person being towed. A Jet Ski pulling a skier must have an observer as well and must be capable of carrying a minimum of 3 people. 4) Conventional water-skis and similar devices may have no tow ropes longer than 80' (longer ropes are permitted for kite skis and parasails only.) 5) A water-skier is not permitted to be returned to the dock or shore under power. The skier shall release outside the 100' no wake limit. Skiers are permitted to start from the shore or dock if the traffic situation permits this to be done safely and in accordance with other water ski regulations. Law enforcement / July 2001 Officers continued to find serious safety violations and particularly the safety of children. All children 12 years of age and under are required to wear a weight appropriate PFD on any boat 20' or less while it is underway. Riding on the bow, transom, swim platform or gunwales is not allowed and extremely dangerous. Safety equipment (or the lack of) continues to be problem. This late in the boating season there really aren't any excuses for not having the required safety items on board. As the days begin to shorten, sunset or "lights on" time comes earlier. Sunset times are listed in your Boaters Handbook. If you are not sure, don't gamble; turn on your lights as visibility lessens. The most numerous violations encountered have been the lack of PFD's (especially on the Sea Kayaks). Another problem area has been Personal Watercraft operating in close proximity to swimmers while at greater than slow minimum swell height speed. Operators should be aware of a focused enforcement effort by officers to curb this activity for the balance of the summer. Pets on boats Many anglers take along their 4 legged fishing buddy. Precautions should be taken to assure that there is shade for the pets and plenty of cool drinking water.
Fishing Report Walleye are being taken from depths of 30' to 75' on the West Side. Hottest spot this past weekend was at '885 & '405 on the Loran TD's. Worm Harnesses continue to be the lure of choice. Jumbo Perch are being taken yet off of Trout Run with many anglers limiting out on them or running out of bait prior to going deeper for walleye action. The main school of Walleye should soon be arriving from the west as the water temperatures continue to warm and drives them into the trenches.
