Lake Erie Fishing Report: April 4, 2002 Some hardy anglers are now pursuing walleyes on Lake Erie and a good number of charter boat services are underway. Anglers have been vertical jigging on Maumee Bay and on Sandusky Bay at the railroad bridge, as well as Western Basin reef areas including areas off Davis Besse, Marblehead and Catawba. A few fish have been reported. Anglers in this early spring walleye fishery typically use a vertical jigging fishing method using leadhead jigs and ice-fishing lures tipped with minnows. A new fishing license for the 2002/2003 fishing season was required as of March 1. River Walleye Runs: The Sandusky River temperature is 44 degrees Fahrenheit and the river is high and muddy. Anglers are catching quite a few walleyes, mostly females. Anglers are using florescent orange jigs. The outlook should be good to excellent for the weekend. The Maumee River is 41 degrees Fahrenheit. The water level is very high and muddy. Anglers are unable to cross over to the Blue Grass Island. It may be a while before anglers will be able to wade. Good numbers of walleyes, both males and females, were being taken from both sides. The best locations are Orleans Park to Fort Meigs. Anglers are using chartreuse and orange jigs.
