and so it begins. "The Trophy" finally got to go to work this weekend and Lake Erie was very kind and generous to all onboard. We successfully managed to capture 5 limits of Walleyes on Saturday and 6 limits on Sunday. All very nice fish. The weather wasn't quite as warm as last weekends record smashing temperatures but was quite comfortable and except for a late day stiff wind on Saturday, winds and waves really were not an issue. And I am scared to say it out loud, but I can not remember the last time I saw water clarity as good as I have seen it this whole spring since I arrived back in March. Just a little stain to it. Perfect ! |
Coming out of downtown Port Clinton we didn't even mess around and just headed right for my favorite reefs. Lots of times I like to hopscotch my way out hitting the beachy areas on the east side of the Camp Perry firing range along the way. The decision played out well as we were immediately in the fish on our first stop, the Toussaint Reef just off the Davis Bessie nuclear stacks. Saturday we rounded out our day by picking some very nice fish off of Round Reef which surprisingly had zero boat traffic on it. Hmmm..., weird but we liked that ! |
Most of our Walleyes were not caught in the skinniest of depths on the reefs but in the adjacent 11 to 15 foot of water. Although we tried some blade baits, fishing with what has become the new standard for spring jigging, the purple colored hair jigs was so good that we for the most part did very little experimenting with anything else. 5/8 oz. jigs with a attached stinger hook and NO BAIT was deadly for our needs. Just hop it along the bottom, never stopping. Lift, drop, lift BAM ! It does not get any more fun then that ! We even managed a few nice Smallmouth Bass mixed in with our Walleyes which is always fun. |
This coming week the weather looks to be delightful and the fishing should continue to be EXCELLENT ! I Have two open dates for this coming week for anyone interested in a spur of the moment trip, April 13th and 14th - a Tuesday and Wednesday. The following week we have our three remaining open dates for the rest of April available, the 21st, 22nd and the 23rd. A Wed., Thur., Fri. Anyone interested in snatching up anyone of these prime fishing dates in the peak of our spring jigging season is welcome to call me at any time of day or night on my mobile # 216-387-2656 for a reservation. It's been a good while since we got off to such a good start. I think it is a wonderful omen !!! LETS GO FISHING ! Capt. Walt |
