As of Monday 3/31/08 the ice continues to clear off of Lake Erie, but areas of ice still exist from Port Clinton towards Catawba, around the Islands, and from Lorain east. Some anglers have been going out of the Turtle Creek area and jigging the Camp Perry reefs for walleye with limited success. Expect historically good spring areas such as the main lake shoreline around Turtle Creek, the Camp Perry reef complex, the islands, Catawba and Marblehead to produce good early walleye fishing when the ice finally clears off and the water begins to warm. Numbers of fish can be caught by jigging with hair jigs and shiners or vibrating blade baits, and trophies are usually caught by trolling open water areas around the spawning reefs. Use extreme caution when boating in 30 and 40 degree water temperatures.
Based on the nearshore forecast the water temperature off of Toledo is 35 and 33 off of Cleveland. |
