Unseasonably warm weather has broken up most of the ice that was forming on Lake Erie. Recent winds have greatly reduced water clarity in most of the western basin. A few anglers have been fishing between Catawba and the Bass Islands in the south passage, and also around Kelleys Island. Walleye and yellow perch have been caught sporadically on jigging spoons or by fishing with spreaders and shiners. Extreme caution is necessary with low water temperatures and floating ice remaining from the December freeze.

The Lake Erie surface temperatures range from 34 to 37 degrees.
