BOATING EDUCATORS, VOLUNTEERS HONORED FOR ACHIEVEMENTS COLUMBUS, OH Six local volunteer organizations and six boating safety educators were recognized recently for their achievements in promoting safety on the water, according to the Ohio Department of Natural Resources (ODNR). The Stark County Park District was recognized for Outstanding Boating Program Achievement. Receiving awards for Prominent Achievement in Boating Safety were the Cleveland-based Spirit of America, the Lake Erie Council of the Girl Scouts of America, Cleveland Metroparks Institute of the Great Outdoors, the Lawrence County Sheriff's Office and the U.S. Coast Guard Auxiliary Flotilla 09-04 based in Lorain. Individual awards for Outstanding Achievement in Boating Safety Education went to Jack Justice of the U.S. Coast Guard Auxiliary Flotilla 09-04 and to Spirit of America boating educators Fred and Patricia Eichenlaub, Ted Quirke, George Christ and Scott Howie. Twenty-five other individuals were recognized for their volunteer service to the ODNR Division of Watercraft during 2003. Thomas Martin of Springfield received a 1,250 Hour Award. Cecilia Duer of Mentor-on-the-Lake, executive director of Spirit of America, was honored with a 500 Hour Award. Lorene Palmer of Ironton received a 250 Hour Award. Certificates of appreciation went to volunteers Gary Branstetter of Kettering, Donald Bell of Lorain, Debra Carmack of Obetz, Philip Clem of Lakeview, Cecilia Duer of Mentor-on-the-Lake, Willam Green of Springfield, Thomas Hackworth of Blue Creek, Mary Hughes of Galena, Tammi Lanane of Columbus, Thomas Martin, Barbara Maichle of Middletown, Kurt McClurg of Maumee, James Michael of Elida, Lorene Palmer, Sara Rathburn-Yourkvitch of Sandusky, Richard Remski of Dayton, Mike Samsel of Olmstead Township, Dona St. Clair of Saleville, Alan Satterwhite of Columbus, Michael Schabeck of Toledo, Gregg Shields of Columbus, Sherre Shields of Columbus, Warren Shupp of Springfield, Esda Washington of Reynoldsburg and David Yourkvitch of Sandusky. All awards were presented during a conference hosted by the ODNR Division of Watercraft at Maumee Bay State Park on November 12-14.
