FREE WINTER FISHING WEEKEND PREMIERES FEBRUARY 19-20 LANSING--Michigan's first Free Winter Fishing Weekend will take place February 19-20, which precedes the observance of President's Day on Monday, February 21. On Saturday, February 19, and Sunday, February 20, fishing license fees will be waived for both residents and nonresidents, though all fishing regulations still apply. The new Free Winter Fishing Weekend was designed to invite both Michigan residents and out-of-state visitors to discover that Michigan provides four seasons of fishing fun for many popular species of fish. Those who try fishing during the Free Winter Fishing Weekend may well find a new winter adventure. Making the winter free fishing days available on the weekend preceding the observance of President's Day recognizes that many families and individuals already may be travelling or recreating over the holiday weekend. It also may encourage others to enjoy a long weekend by spending time outdoors. Those who participate in the Free Fishing Weekend are reminded that a fishing license will be needed to fish on Monday, February 21. Michigan's popular summer Free Fishing Weekend, which always is observed in conjunction with National Fishing Week, will be held June 10-11 this year. These special opportunities are long-term investments designed to heighten the awareness of all citizens of the importance of being good stewards of Michigan's unique natural resources. The new Free Winter Fishing Weekend places a special emphasis on the diverse outdoor recreation that Michigan has to offer during every season throughout the year.
