Fishing report for the week of September 11, 2011.

Bad, bad weather ! Not only did I get my Monday Labor day off due to very bad lake conditions this past week, Mother Nature also gave me Tuesday off, Wednesday off, Thursday off and when I finally went back to work on Friday, we probably really should not have gone. What was supposed to be 2 foot or less wave heights on the lake on Friday according to Thursdays forecast from our friends at the National Weather Service, in reality turned out to be easy 3 to 5 footers all day long with probably a few 6 footers mixed in. Just plain nasty ! They are totally clueless with their wind and wave guesses and predictions. Truly unbelievable in this day and age.

And this past weeks heavy weather did not do our Walleye fishing any favors either. Things seem to have really changed out there and definitely not for the better. Friday was down right tough with the junk fish really fired up and very slow Walleye action. We handled so many Sheephead it was just unreal ! I actually think we could have done better with the Walleyes if we could have kept the crap fish off our lines. It was just plain terrible. Saturday I found a little pocket of really nice sized Walleyes way east and just spun circles all day long around them, We still caught a lot of Sheephead but we did manage to pull 16 really nice sized Walleyes out from that one little area. And we lost enough fish over the coarse of the day where we should have easily been well into the 20's for fish caught for my 4 pack group. Such is fishing but I think everyone was very happy none the less, myself included !

Sunday officially finally kicked off the beginning of the fall Perch season for me and "The Trophy" and we did them up big on our first attempt. Yesterday on my way north east to go Walleye fishing, I marked heavily what I thought looked like a incredible amount of Perch in about 63 foot of water. Knowing that I had a Perch trip today, I marked the spot on my chart plotter to investigate a bit closer today. From the moment the anchor grabbed, it was game on for us ! What I thought was some Perch really was the Mother Load of Perch ! Doubles and triples ruled the day ( or should I say, morning ! lol ! ) There was 6 of us onboard and it seemed like in no time, we had our 180 nice sized Perch in the cooler and heading back to port. Awesome, awesome, awesome ! Nothing but big smiles from everyone !!!

So I am not really sure what we are going to do tomorrow. My group actually wants to do both, Walleye and Perch. I don't think that is going to happen. It didn't sound real promising listening to the guys that were Walleye fishing today. It would not break my heart if we just Perch fished from here on out. I think I am just plain Walleyed out. It's been a long road since I started this past spring way back in March. We'll see. I'll talk it over with the guy's in the morning. Either way, it looks like another tough week coming up weather wise with things predicted to go nasty again as early as Tuesday. Once again, we will just have to see how it all plays out. Frankly, I don't think our Walleye fishing can sustain another round of bad weather before they get totally scattered out and moved down the lake out of our striking range. It happens every September. It just seems a bit early yet this year for it to be over with already. But the Perchin is HOT ! Stay tuned...

Capt. Walt

We have now pushed our departure time back once again because it is simply staying dark so long now in the mornings. I am now telling everyone that we are leaving at 6:00am. You still should be at the marina by 5:45 at the very latest to get all loaded up so we can be ready to roll by 6am sharp. I myself will still continue to be at the boat right around 5:30. And for those that still don't know it, there are no fishing licenses at the marina. You need to get those ahead of time. Call me if you have any questions or concerns.
