Fishing report for the week Sept. 4, 2011.

Great fishing ! I mean, really GREAT fishing ! This past week was probably one of the most pleasant weeks that I have had this whole past summer. Just plain nice weather with really GREAT Walleye fishing ! It's September and the fish are now moving in some. And even though we are sorting thru much more garbage fish then we would like to beings a bit closer in, the fuel savings in itself is very much appreciated. Rather then burn $300 some dollars of fuel each day, we are "only" burning $200 + dollars each day. Can you even imagine? Burning only $240 dollars or so of gas and being totally elated because "that's all it took" ! Pretty sad actually... I hope it comes as no big surprise to everyone next season when we finally adjust our rates slightly to adjust for what we have been going through here the last few years. I am flat out telling everyone right now just to be fore warned..., I am not in this just to meet expenses. I never was. And these last couple of months, that's about all I felt I was doing on a lot of days. All that while still getting up at 3:30 each morning, working my ass off all day long and going to bed at 8:00pm each day just to do it over again. Come rough weather or whatever else.

But for now, nothing is new and my crews continue to take home on most days anywhere from 50 to 100 pounds of boneless, skinless fillets each day whenever the weather cooperates. Simply awesome. I just hope and pray we can keep it going for just a few more weeks. That's what it has finally boiled down to. Just a few more weeks of Walleye trips. In a lot of ways I am very happy to see it end, yet it puts a lump in my throat. Knowing that another year has slipped by us and just that fast, we are all another year older and knowing that come next season, a lot of the old familiar faces will just simply not ever be back again for one reason or another. When you've been doing this as long as I have, you make a lot of friends. Some of them are really old friends and who for whatever reason, just won't return . That's the mixed emotions that I have each season as things wind down. But before I get too down and out about all this, we still have a few more weeks of Walleye trips to go yet and about a month or so of Perch charters. Only then can I really say, it's a "wrap" !

It looks like I will get to enjoy my Monday, Labor Day 2011 off of work along with most all of the rest of the nation. With a very bad lake forecast of 4 to 6 foot waves predicted by the National Weather Guessers Service for Monday, I've decided to try and save my crew the wasted trip up here and just flat out went ahead and cancelled Mondays trip. We'll see. They have been so terribly wrong all year with their wind and waves forecasts. With my luck and their track record, I'll probably wake up to a dead flat lake. None the less, I am ready for a scheduled day off. Many of the past lost days here recently still resulted in me getting up at my usual 3:30 in the morning and still being down at the dock before 5am just to visit with my crew and ultimately send them packing without even collecting a dime. Tomorrow, I am SLEEPING IN ! YEE - HAW !!! lol ! Actually, sadly the whole upcoming weeks forecast looks a little less then desirable right now. Hopefully it will not come to pass and this will be a short lived affair as opposed to last year's fiasco right about this same time of year when we lost about a week straight due to bad weather. But you just never know around here though...

Anyway, whenever we do make it back out there, I guess we are going to have to bump our departure time back even furthur yet again. It is starting to stay dark out there in the mornings FOREVER now ! I am trying to get the word out now to all of my up and coming groups that we are going to have to start leavening at 6:00am. Yeah ! I can sleep in till 4:30 in the morning now ! And if the weather allows, I will actually have a Perch report next Sunday as well when I have to run a odd and the first Perch trip of the fall before returning and running a couple more weeks solid of Walleye trips. But once I start carrying all of my Perch gear, you never know when I may take the easy way out for the day if the conditions are less then ideal for chasing the Walleyes and talk the guys into going Perchin ! I like to Walleye fish as much as anyone but by now it's starting grow on me and become a very expensive and annoying chore taking in all the junk fish and the big winds of fall starting to set in. Just a few more weeks... I can do this. I just got to keep telling myself, just a few more weeks... Lol ! Happy Labor Day Everyone !

Capt. Walt

We have now pushed our departure time back once again because it is simply staying dark so long now in the mornings. I am now telling everyone that we are leaving at 6:00am. You still should be at the marina by 5:45 at the very latest to get all loaded up so we can be ready to roll by 6am sharp. I myself will still continue to be at the boat right around 5:30. And for those that still don't know it, there are no fishing licenses at the marina. You need to get those ahead of time. Call me if you have any questions or concerns.
