Fishing report for the week of July 31, 2011.

The three H's ! Hazy, humid and HOT WALLEYE FISHING !!! Wow, what a week. I would venture to say that this past week was as good as it get gets ! And all it took was to add yet another hundred bucks to the already obscene daily fuel bill. We took it out even more further north this past week than we've been out this whole summer and besides the much higher gas bill at the end of the day, we finally hit the pay dirt that we've been looking for. The Mother Load ! And it truly was as good as it gets ! About 17 to 20 miles offshore of Ashtabula apparently right now lies a school of fish that most Walleye anglers can only dream about. A very wide spread area, not a pocket mind you as we've been used to working all summer but a huge area miles long and miles wide of huge non stop Walleye action. Even better than anyone had prayed or hoped for in this season of challenging weather and questionable fish population numbers. Like I said, a Walleye anglers dream come true...

Last weeks lack of a fishing report was not due to the lack of anything to talk about on my part. Somehow I always find something to talk about. Rather, it was due to to my wife's well deserved little mini vacation that she took where she wasn't around to post my cat scratch notes and thoughts to the website. Although I am the one that actually writes the rough draft of the weekly fishing reports, she is the one that corrects all of my mistakes and grammar and does the actual copy and paste of the text to the necessary forms along with the re-sizing of the photos that I have settled on each week that makes this all possible. Without her helpful hard work, these reports would probably never happen. And as far as that goes, "The Trophy" would probably never be quite as clean and presentable as it usually is each week without her loving touches and hard work. Thank you Joyce ! Many of you have met her dockside at the end of your trip. Some of you may have even fished with her on the handful of days that she has gone along and "first mated" for us. If so, you know what I am talking about. A very dedicated hard working person. Thanks again !

This past week I received a note on my websites' contact form page with no return e-mail address from someone that I had a bit of a close call with out on the lake. It wasn't really that big a deal, just a boat that had a fish on and some tangles going at the same time as we most all do from time to time that happened to be on a collision course with my boat had I not hollered out and got their attention. I was giving way hard but could only do so much with out a little help. It all ended well when the particular individual ran up to the helm and regained control of the wheel. Anyway, this individual took the time to leave me one of the most sincere apology notes via my contact form that I have ever received. And although I had no return e-mail address, to thank you personally, your explanation and apology really touched me and I really appreciated it. Thank you Frank. If you're ever around River Marine, stop by and introduce yourself. I'll buy you a beer or pop ! It's all good...

So now it's August. The real dog days of summer. Hot, humid and hazy. Just as summer should be. And the Walleye fishing is really great ! Life is good at the moment at least for us out of the port of Ashtabula and although the fuel bills are ugly, the results are certainly worth the added effort. Thanks again to all of you kicking in the extra tip dollars at the end of your trip day which allows me to do my thing day after day on your behalf without worrying about being forced to charge any kind of fuel sur-charges or letting fuel considerations be the determining factor as to how far out or how fast we are going to go to get to the fish no matter how far out they are. We have not increased rates in years and it is for this exact reason why. You guys are the best ! Let's hope these fish slide back in south a few more miles so we can spend this tip money the way it was really intended to be spent, on COCKTAILS ! Lol !!! Another new report will be back up again next weekend. Stay tuned !

Capt. Walt

*It is imperative that we get out early. These fish most of the time feed like crazy right at dawn and then really shut down when the sun gets higher. I am at the boat at 5:00am everyday and we need to be off the dock by 5:30am at the VERY LATEST ! For all of my upcoming trips, I urge you to be there as early as possible so we don't miss out on this opportunity. Also there are no fishing license sales at the marina again this summer so you guys have to get them on your own ahead of time. You can do so online or the local K-Mart or Wal-Mart here in Ashtabula which both are open 24 hours a day.
