Fishing report for the week of July10, 2011.

"Just another day on THE TROPHY" ! I've been hearing that a lot lately from my repeating smiling guests. And rightfully so. We have settled into a nice pattern of repetitious great days. And just like for 25 years of chartering now, the Ashtabula,OH area does not disappoint. Day after day, month after month, summer after summer and year after year. We have had so many fabulous summers that most of my guys that have come up for many years now just simply expect great fishing. And this whole past week "The Trophy" and the Ashtabula's great fishery provided rock solid results. Near perfect limits every day other then a couple of days where we knocked off just a few fish short. For most, it was "Just another GREAT day on THE TROPHY" !

The Walleyes are now super deep already and aboard "The Trophy" we have made the complete switch to the wire line trolling program. Something that I am the very best at. I just really like using this system.
Trolling deep diving Jr. Thundersticks has been working very well for us the last couple of weeks. Just like it has for almost the whole 25 years that I've been dragging them them around. I often wonder how many miles I've swam those little puppies ! Lol ! I am sure it's in the many 10's of thousands of miles. And to this day it still amazes me how productive this technique is. It just plain works. Day in, day out. Year after year. It just works. Get those lures down deep and the big Walleyes will come. Simply awesome !

We have continued to catch at least one Steelhead Trout on practically every outing here as of late as well. Always great excitement as these jumpers raise havoc in their attempt to get free. In this past week we also had a big surprise when a very nice Lake Trout, also commonly known as a Laker smashed a Savant spoon off a downrigger about 55 ft down over 71 foot of water. And unlike the Steelie's that almost always come flying to the surface and make tremendous leaps after leap completely out of the water, this Laker just dove straight down ! It was like trying to raise a bag of rocks! And even when we had it nearly to the surface we could hardly pull it away from under the boat as it literally was trying to swim forward under the boat even though it was under the tow of the boat creeping forward at about 2 miles an hour. Crazy! In the end we won the battle. Only the 4th Lake Trout ever captured aboard "The Trophy" in the whole 25 years I've been doing this and the thousand upon thousands of miles and thousand and thousands of man hours spent chasing the Walleyes. A real unique treat !

So the weather looks to be really good right on through this next upcoming week. Fishing has been very consistent thus far also and should remain to be very good as well with the nice stable weather. And if anything, it should only get better out there as more and more migrating Walleyes move into the region to spend their summer in the smelt rich deep cool waters that always attract these fish to the Ashtabula area year after year. The only downside as I mentioned in my previous reports, these fish are really on the march north now. No surprise. After all it's practically mid July. Not that big a deal when the lake is nice and we can zip right out there but not without it's share of problems when the lake starts to kick. And then there's that little thing about the added gasoline prices being more then a dollar more a gallon this summer then it was last year at the marina pumps. YIKES ! Again, thanks to all you guys, my loyal sponsors that understand this and kick in the extra $$$'s at the end of the trip so that I can continue offering you "Just another day on "The Trophy" !

Capt. Walt

*It is imperative that we get out early. These fish most of the time feed like crazy right at dawn and then really shut down when the sun gets higher. I am at the boat at 5:00 a.m. everyday and we need to be off the dock by 5:30am at the VERY LATEST ! For all of my upcoming trips, I urge you to be there as early as possible so we don't miss out on this opportunity. Also there are no fishing license sales at the marina again this summer so you guys have to get them on your own ahead of time. You can do so online or the local K-Mart or Wal-Mart here in Ashtabula which both are open 24 hours a day.
