Winding down fast now. Only got out a couple of more times on the Perch charters this past week but actually managed to get out and fish for myself a couple of days as well for a change. The rest of the week was like all the others this fall. Even if I had trips everyday, I would have ended up cancelling them anyway because of the on again off again super rough lake conditions that seem to have plagued us this entire Perch season. There have been lots of very rough days mixed in amongst the days that have been fishable.
The days that I did get out were like most all the others as far as the catching went. Simply fabulous ! The size of the Perch as of late has been simply huge. On Mondays trip we had a 4 man limit of 120 jumbo's that weighed in at a whopping 69 pounds. That's an almost 6/10ths of a pound average ! And I thought they were HUGE when we were carrying close to a half pound average ! The rest of the days that I fished last week the fish did average slightly less but were still VERY, VERY nice !
I've been very happy also that all of these big Perch are now coming from quite close to Ashtabula harbor. We've been concentrating most of our efforts anywhere from about 47 foot of water just over a mile out to 55 foot of water just over 3 miles out. A walk in the park compared to most of the runs that we've been making for about the last 3 months !
So we are down to our final two weeks of this season. It all seems like a big blur to me. It always does. I guess I'm ready to get away from it for a few months . And now that I have a few Perch in the freezer even I will be able to enjoy a few Perch dinners over the course of the long winter to come. There is still time for some of you to hook up with me for a last chance Perch trip and get yours as well as I still have plenty of open days these final two weeks. And if the weather cooperates and I find myself doing nothing, I think I might just work a little more on that freezer thing for myself !
