Fishing report for the week of September 4, 2010.

A short week. Well "The Trophy" got to go to work Monday thru Friday this past week but Mother Nature laid us and the whole fleet off for the Labor Day weekend with gale force winds blowing to 35 knots and waves predicted at 12 foot seas. As I write this article a day earlier then usual, it is wicked windy outside. I drove down to Walnut Beach a little while ago and was in awe over the fury the big lake was displaying. Massive huge sheets of waves just sweeping across the lake as far as you could see and washing completely over the break walls as if they were not even there. Some of the waves and spray were literally engulfing completely over the entire lighthouse at the end of the break wall. Just an incredible display !

So I cancelled Sat. & Sun. but at this point we are still going to try and fish starting again with Monday when the winds are supposed to ease some but quite honestly there is still a lot of wind forecasted for well into the upcoming week. And what is going to happen to the Walleye fishing once we get back on the water is anyone's guess. This is the biggest blow we've had since May and since it is already September, this one could be a real game changer. I wish it could have held off one more week because that's about all I have left for my scheduled Walleye trips before we start Perching seriously with just the odd Walleye trip mixed in a few more days the rest of the month. I guess we've had it so good for so long that none of us really have room to complain... unless you happen to be the ones that just got cancelled out or are still scheduled for this shaky upcoming week ! LOL !

This past week was still very good for us although the Sheep Head were a real nuisance. I actually pulled lines one day to get away from them because they were over running us so badly. At one point we were catching them 12 at a time ! Every rod on the boat was hooked up with massively huge Drums. I knew my crew did not have the strength to tough thru to many rounds like that. We found a reprieve from them way up in the north east corner by the PA. - Canadian line. There was still very good Walleye fishing up there with next to no garbage fish but it just is a insanely long run from Ashtabula Harbor. I however did what I felt I had to do but I hated every minute of the incredible long run out there and back. Especially the couple days the lake chopped up on us. Man looking back, I sure do enjoy my June trips when the fish are in close and high in the water column where we don't have to run our lines back a mile just to get down to the fish. That and the fact that we rarely catch any trash fish that time of year. Is that ever nice! But that is then and now is now and we do what we have to do. Whatever it takes to fill the box, no matter what time of year it is.

Hopefully we will get back out there in another day or so and not too much changes on us. It's still too early on in Sept. for it to really be over but around here you never know. I will be loading the Perch gear on to the boat this week just in case so at least we will now have a plan "B" lol ! These are the open dates that I have left for the rest of this month : Sept. 14th, 21st, 23rd, and the 27th & 28th. The 14th might still be a good choice for a late season Walleye trip. I will know more here in a day or so after getting back out there. Anybody interested can call me and I will give you a trueful opinion of what I know and how I feel it's going to go. Most likely Perch charters from mid Sept. and on would be a safer bet... We'll see how this all plays out. In the mean while I am going to try and relax and enjoy these days off and get ready for the seasons final push as the fishing season 2010 winds down. Stay tuned...
