White bass update, Bluegrass Is. and Buttonwood good conditions: ,

with the receding water levels and water clearing - the white bass fishing has been good, getting better everyday. We had fishermen out today and things were very hot in a few of our favorite holes on Bluegrass Island and also on the other side of the river in the Buttonwood area. We fished about 4 hours toward the end of the day. The white bass averaged a solid 9 inches with both the males and females in full spawn. Our biggest was around 13" - this trip was catch and release. We moved to a few of our different lures but found 1/16 oz white or chartreuce leadhead jigs with 2" twister tails to be the most effective. Also try crankbaits (ultralight size), beetle spins (1/8 or 1/16 oz.), mepps spinners (size 1 or 2). We had lots of fun and these fish really put up a heck of a fight with 6 lb. test. As the water clears, 4 lb. is not out of the question if you really want to go ultralite. The white bass know how to jump, leverage against the current and head shake. Ultralite is the way to go for the most fun. Also had some inquiries about fly fishing - these white bass slam streamers - really some of my favorite type of fishing. Our group doesn't use fly gear but I have seen success in years of fishing the Maumee river. |

Still slow but getting better again with each passing day. That about sums up the Walleye fishing after the first part of last week’s 3-day gale. Early last Sunday the massive windstorm hit the area with sustained winds of 40 mph with gusts to 57 mph! This lasted right through Monday and dropped off slightly but was still significant on Tuesday. And as always after a massive blow, the western basin of Lake Erie was pretty much a mud bowl. We got out Wednesday and the lake was calm. Water clarity was a major issue so we elected to troll on all of my trips the rest of the week. The only semi-clean water we could find was just N.E. of Kellys Island. Fishing was slow but we managed to troll up from half a dozen to a dozen fish each day including some 28 and 29 inchers! What worked for us was #20 Jet Divers with Stinger spoons fished 170 ft. behind the boards. Most of the fish we were taking were suspended around 30-32 ft. over about 40-45 ft. of water depth. The area was stacked with fish and it was amazing to see that many fish on the color graph fishfinder only to catch one every once in a while. I truly believe that once the water clears up a little more and we get just a few more degrees of water temperature in this deeper water that this area is really going to light up. I hope it happens quickly because we are down to our last week here in Port Clinton before we move our operation to Ashtabula, OH for the rest of the season. After a tough couple of days, the drifters are starting to do OK out in the open lake. Best areas have been around Locust Reef and in front of the CYC on the west side of Catawba Island. Sounds pretty good weather wise for this week. We’ll see. Capt. Walt |

Fishing Report for the week of 5/11/03 - Port Clinton, OH : ,

A pretty slow week. This was by far the toughest week we’ve had since the first week of April. A pesky east-northeast wind blew almost all week. In fact a few days were very miserable with rain and cold temperatures. We ended up fishing either behind the islands or on the lee side of Catawba. Although we caught a few Walleyes on all of our outings, it was nothing to write home about. We ended up using bottom bouncers with crawler harnesses each day. We caught some on both gold and chartreuse spinner rigs. My hopes for getting a couple of days of trolling in were quickly erased with the lousy weather pattern. I think you could probably get a few more Walleyes vertical jigging if you could get a calmer day with a slow drift. The Sheephead are really starting to turn on now along with a lot of White Perch. The “beach” west of Davis Bessie has very dirty water with the rough water all week. Not a whole lot to talk about this week. Water temps are now in the upper 50’s off of Toledo. The weather for the next couple of days is supposed to be windy with possible gale force winds. Just what we don’t need. We’ll see. The trolling up in the flats should be just about ready to cut loose if we ever get a break from the wind. Stay tuned. Capt. Walt |
Maumee River water levels: ,
Posted by: Homerun Charters Date Posted: 12:49:46 5/12/03 |
Water level is one of the most important factors for the fishing that we do on the Maumee River for both walleye and white bass. With all the rain we have had recently we are seeing really high water levels for an extended period of time. Righ now it is at 590 feet above sea level. Optimum fishing is around 583 and under. Some of our parking lots are flooded under. In other words, call us at 888-805-1525 to see when the river is fishable again. It will be interesting to see how the White Bass Fishing will go after these rains. |

Fishing Report for the week of 5/4/03 - Port Clinton, OH : ,
Posted by: Capt. Walt Ermansons Date Posted: 21:40:48 5/04/03 |
A pretty good week. The weather wasn’t too awfully bad this past week; in fact on a couple of days it was down right nice. The fishing was just like the weather, the nicer the better. We caught fish all three ways. We jigged on a few trips, dragged bottom bouncers and crawlers on a couple of trips and as I mentioned last week, we even trolled a little bit this past week. The best “bite” by far was west of the “nuke” tower on the beach anywhere from 8 or 9 ft. of water to 19 and 20 ft. depending on water clarity. We absolutely smoked the Walleyes last Monday in 7 ft. of water in front of Crane Creek! These fish were taken on blade baits. This won’t last much longer as water temps continue to climb. More and more Walleyes are being taken on nightcrawlers. We caught some more around North Bass over the weekend. Most were only around 3 pounds, which kind of surprised me. This area usually produces lots of post spawn big Walleyes. The one and only day we trolled “The Trophy” last week we caught some Walleyes around C Can. These fish were taken on #20 Jets with Stinger Spoons and Fenwick Wobbling Minnows. We were using Fire Line in 20 lb. test trolled 60 to 100 ft. back. The real big trolling bite is still going on north of Kelly’s Island. I hope to put a couple of good days in there this coming week. Water temps are now above 50 degrees and we are seeing more and more Sheephead starting to turn on along with some nice Yellow Perch and Smallmouth. May is a happening month here in the western basin. More and more Walleyes will begin to suspend and start to feed aggressively now that the spawn is over. The weather should continue to become more and more summer like with each passing day. If you have been waiting to go, wait no longer. It’s happening! Capt. Walt |
5/1/03 update to maumee river walleye and white bass: ,
Posted by: Homerun Charters Date Posted: 19:33:04 5/01/03 |
5/1/03 update to Maumee River walleye and white bass Here we are, May 1st. Be sure you check out your local DNR regulations for fishing the Maumee River before going down to the river. Treble hooks (for Mepps or Rooster Tail spinners - white bass favorites) are allowed along with some other fishing changes including daily bag limit of 6 walleye now. The thunderstorms in the area should help bring water levels up. We saw some very good fishing yesterday. There are some pretty active fish in the area, with your deeper pools still holding walleye. This is a super time to get out there and go fishing people. Fewer crowds, warmer weather, hungry male walleye that strike jigs more aggressively. With the storms predicted I suspect that this will raise water levels and make fishing easier for the walleye. We know that the walleye are less spooky with some cloudier water - that is why they tend to bite more readily in the morning and evening on the Maumee River - these fish are light sensitive. Action is there for the taking and fishing now can produce fast action and the mixed bag of chunky male eater walleye with white bass. Also a good time to switch to the 1/8 oz lead heads about 18 inches apart with a 2" twister in bright colors to double your chances of catching walleye or white bass. Don't be afraid to try something different away from the #4 floater jigs (like small lead heads). Go with 6 lb test if you can get away with it and remember to release your female walleyes. |

One of our guides just got off the river this Sunday evening. The females still have some eggs in them. In fact, we caught a large 8 or 9 pounder on Friday that still had eggs spewing out of it. That goes to show that the cold March is still affecting these fish and set the spawning period back a few weeks. Its just that the water level is not optimum right now. It would be nicer if the water level was up. I think a big rain would bring more fish up the river and trigger active feeding. That would be a great time to get some nice eater males. To repeat - we caught a big female on Friday (released) and it was full of eggs - looked to be right in the middle of the spawn. Sunday 9:10 p.m.------just got home from the river. Seemed like the fishing is picking back up. I had about 2 hours to fish this time out of Bluegrass Island. In those 2 hours I saw a guy fishing where the boats usually line up in the middle of the river, he caught about 10 fish in an hour only kept one. The guys around me were also catching fish. I only picked up about 3 or 4. Saw ALOT of fish coming up to the top of the water. Two walleye right on top of each other came up about 5 feet in front me. Then the bigger of the 2 came up 2 more times. |

Luck of the draw. That’s the best way to describe the way our trips went this past week. On the days that the lake wasn’t rough, we killed the fish with some limit catches. Then we had days like Tuesday and Saturday that were terrible. The lake was very rough and immediately muddied up which made for some very tough fishing for everyone. And so it’s been most all of April, up and down, depending on the day. Even the pros from all over the country, the best of the best learned this during the 3 day PWT. The action on the reefs seems to be slowing up. You can still pull some fish but it is not as fast as it was. The best action I seen all week was on “the beach” in front of Tuttle Creek. Monday we had 7 limits of Walleyes by 1:00 p.m. These fish were caught in 13 ft. of water and we were still jigging. I’m hearing more and more reports of Walleyes being caught on bottom bouncers and nightcrawlers. In fact we took a couple of really big Walleyes aboard “The Trophy” over the weekend up by North Bass in 30 ft. of water on Northland crawler harnesses and nightcrawlers. This should get better with each passing day as these big spawned out females start using the passages between the islands on their trek towards the big open waters to the east. The best trolling action that I am aware of has been north of Gull Island Shoals, up towards the U.S. - Canadian line. This area has managed to remain mud free even after some of the big blows. Most of the better trollers have been getting anywhere from 3 or 4 to a high of a dozen or so. The size has been impressive though. Nice fish. We have yet to troll aboard “The Trophy” this spring. Maybe one day this week. Some Perch are being caught between Rattle Snake and Green Island. Not very many Bass were caught this week. Water temps are in the upper 40’s. A few more degrees and the Bass will go big time. Capt. Walt |

Update on maumee river fishing 4/23 - walleye: ,
Posted by: Homerun Charters Date Posted: 12:26:16 4/24/03 |
Hello - After 6-8 hours of hard fishing yesterday, things did not pick up. Our group had one walleye caught legally with 8 or so snagged (and released) fish. Fish were available but we have been working harder than normal to get ours. There are a couple of reasons for this.... The fish were not acitvely feeding, rather sitting unactive on the bottom. There is no doubt that much needed rain would help out the walleye cause. This tells us a couple of things. Rain would stir some things up and get some fresh water in the Maumee River System putting fish on the feed. The fishing the post spawn run is dependent on decent water levels. Since the river is much lower than average, the next move is to lighter tackle. |

Hello - Although we are not seeing any white bass yet - which are the signs of the last half of the walleye run - we are working harder to catch our walleye. We fished this morning with not much luck. Snagged (and released) one walleye. We were also bringing back our jigs with walleye scales on the hook. That means that we are bouncing the back of walleye in productive water. Occasionally carp or buffalo are snagged but their scales are much bigger. You can tell when you get on of those hooked up. But for some reason or another they were not active today. A little colder than normal also this morning. I think some rain and warmer nights would give the run a breath of fresh air. That would stir up the feeder creeks and put new bait in the water, fish would be on the feed. We have not had any good rainfalls in the past 2 weeks. Water level is low at 578 and barely over your boots when you cross to bluegrass island. |

Fishing Report for the week of 4/20/03 - Port Clinton, OH : ,
Posted by: Capt. Walt Ermansons Date Posted: 06:10:01 4/21/03 |
A roller coaster ride. That best describes this past weeks’ weather and fishing. The first part of the week was excellent with air temperatures that cracked 80 degrees. Walleye fishing was excellent on all the reefs and the beaches. All the standard jigging stuff worked. Water clarity was excellent and water temps jumped to the mid 40’s. The trollers started doing good north of the reefs in the area known as the flats. Wednesday the Professional Walleye Tournament kicked off with lots of good catches coming in. The pros weigh in their best 5 fish each day. The top 3 weights on opening day were: 1st place, Daryl Christensen of Montello, WI with 45.63 lbs., 2nd place, David Kraft of Bismarck, ND with 41.89 lbs. and 3rd place, Jim Carroll of Minot, ND with 41.51 lbs. The big fish of the day was caught by Kale Kuklinski of Adell, WI with a 12.76 pounder! I was very impressed with all the limit catches that were weighed in. With the lousy weather most of April so far and the colder water temperatures for this time of year, I didn’t expect a whole lot. It just goes to show these guys are good. Unfortunately day two of the tournament was cancelled when a powerful Northeaster kicked in overnight with gale force winds and waves running 7 to 9 ft. On Friday, the National Weather Service blew the forecast big time. It was supposed to be 4 to 6 footers. Everyone woke up to a dead flat lake. This permitted the tournament boats to get their final day in. Results were dramatically different though. The storm the day before muddied most of the western basin back up and shut down for the most part the trolling bite. The pros that switched to jigging on the reefs managed to catch their 5 fish but these were smaller males and overall weights were considerably less than those seen the first day. The guys that stuck it out trolling struggled and most were lucky to have even a fish to weigh! Daryl Christensen caught 2 Walleyes on Friday that together weighed in at 11.55 lbs. He finished with a two-day total of 7 fish for 57.18 lbs. This was good enough for him to hold on to 1st place and win the top prize of $63,000! David Kraft managed to hold on to 2nd place by catching a fish weighing 8.03 lbs. for a 6 fish total of 49.92 lbs. He took home the runner up check of $20,000. In my opinion what a mistake for him not to run down to the reefs and jig up 5 smaller males for the live box and then go trolling for a larger fish. I think that strategy would have won him the tournament since he missed first place by only 7.26 lbs. He only had one fish Friday trolling and I’m rather certain he could have jigged up 4 quick ones on the reefs. Even if they were only a couple pounders (not likely), that would have been good enough. Brad Davis of Jackson, WI moved into 3rd place with a six fish total of 49.53 lbs. This won him $13,000 in prize money. We were back at it on the reefs Saturday and easily jigged up a limit of 24 nice Walleyes. A few Smallmouth are starting to show up also in the catches as the water continues to warm. I look for a few Walleye to be caught on nightcrawlers this coming week. Incidentally, when checked by the Ohio Department of Natural Resource officers, of the 300 plus Walleyes caught by the pros on Wednesday, all but 2 were completely spawned out. Interesting! Capt. Walt |

Hello - Even though the weather has been a little bad the past few days and the winds have been strong - the walleyes has still been very highly pursued by local anglers. Best areas have been both sides (east and west end) of Bluegrass Island, Buttonwood. The usual colors are producing and occasionally a smoke or root beer color is working because the water clarity is good. A good rule of thumb is to stick with bright colors like white, chartreuse, pink and orange when the water clarity is bad. With clearer water you can get away with using darker colors because they contrast against the clear water. Females are showing up with eggs - please release all you sportsman. Chunky male eaters are providing the bulk of the action. |

It’s happening! After almost yet another week of really crappy weather, this past weekend really shaped up nicely. We finally got out last Friday and the Walleye fishing has been excellent! I was very surprised to see all the spawning females rolling on the surface in full-fledged spawning rituals. There were plenty of active males eager to smack blade baits or jig and minnow rigs either casting or vertical jigging. Water temps are still below 40 degrees but a lot of the fish that we caught were spewing their eggs very loosely and the males were all milking heavily as we handled them. Many of the southern most reefs seem to be the best producers such as Locust, Turtle or Toussaint. Water depths of 7 to 13 foot worked best for us. Saturday we took a boat limit of 24 Walleyes easily with all the fish coming from about 11 foot. The beach areas west of Davis Besse power plant have been producing a few fish although the water has been quite a bit muddier closer to shore. It didn’t sound like the trollers were doing anything yet. This should change this week with the predicted much warmer temperatures. All the pro fishermen from around the country are in town for this weeks’ season opener of the professional Walleye tour. These guys are mostly dedicated trollers and it will be interesting if they can match last years record setting catches. With the late ice and colder water temperatures, I predict they will have a much harder time. I should have some results next week. For anyone interested, we still have a sprinkling of open dates available for the next few weeks. Capt. Walt |

Just got off the river. The fishing was a 7 out of 10. It is now worth your time to get down there when the fishing is good. The water is still high, just fish at White Street or Orleans or Buttonwood. Started to get somewhat crowded at the end of the day. we were using the usual 1/4 oz carolina rig with floater at the end. Same colors, pink, chartreuse, and white. Check out www.homeruncharters.com for tips and technique if you've never done it before. Saw something amazing today, one idiot stepped out of the water with a stringer full of fish - and I mean full! He had 8 walleye in his possession! TOTALLY ILLEGAL. The limit is 4. The weather prediction looks great and water levels should be optimum by Sunday or Monday. Prime time - or close to it - is upon us for this run. |
try Buttonwood - conditions improving quickly: ,

It is now Thursday and the river is still a little angry. The clarity is not as good as we would like. The water level is higher than normal, but that doesn't affect fishing as much as the clarity problem. The forecast looks good this weekend for minimal rain and with the receeding waters, one should be able to fish Buttonwood by Saturday or Sunday. Although is has been cold, we are still seeing fish in our usual spots. In other words, things look OK now but are improving quickly. This weekend should bring lots of good fishing. If you need a guide check out www.homeruncharters.com They get fish when others don't and eliminate unproductive time. Try using floaters with 1/4 to 1/2 oz. egg sinker with chartruse, yellow, white, pink tails. The flow rate will dictate the amount of weight to use, remember you want to feel that tick, tick, tick of the bottom and set the hook with the gradual pressure of a hit. |

Maumee river water temps cooling, rising: ,
Posted by: Homerun Charters Date Posted: 12:34:13 4/07/03 |
Fished on Saturday, April 5th. With the 34 degree temps and 25 mph winds it was nothing nice out on the Maumee. Actually, water temps were a little warm for that time of year before the cold rain and cold front moved through the area. It has continued to stay cold, bringing us back down to normal. Regardless, the river is still messy and needs to settle down. When the weather settles down and we have a period when the pressure is steady and the weather is fair, look out. Water flow is good which will bring in the fish. We fished saturday with only a handful of other anglers at the Buttonwood then Ft. Meigs location. Chartruse floaters and 1/2 to 5/8 ounce of lead was getting us to that tick, tick of the bottom. No fish were caught, and only 2 were seen the entire day. You weren't missing anything. |
Fishing Report for the week of 4/06/03 - Port Clinton, OH : ,

A chilly start. After what ended up being a very cold and long winter, the ice finally left the western basin of Lake Erie the last week of March. “The Trophy” officially went into the water for the season on March 29th. You could still see a few ice flows out on the water! Unfortunately, the weather prevented anyone from going out the first week. Even the fleet of big steel head boats stayed in safe harbor. Water temps the first week hovered around 35 degrees. On a positive note the ice fishing in the western basin this winter was fantastic with lots of really big Walleyes being caught. This should be the trend as fishermen get back out on the water. From my experiences over the last 20 years, whenever we have a hard winter we have a fabulous spring and summer of Walleye fishing. I am excited over the prospects of this because most of last season was slightly slower than most would have liked to see. On an unrelated but equally important note if you also have your own boat and plan on doing some boating on Lake Erie. Water levels so far this spring on Lake Erie are EXTREMELY low. Shockingly low as a matter of fact. There will be a lot of dangerous spots on the lake, especially here in the western basin. The Corp of Engineers is predicting water levels will be about a foot lower than last year for this season and it was already low last year. You better know what you are doing or go with someone that does. Think spring and warmer weather! |

Our a portion of group fished the westernmost edge of Bluegrass Island yesterday with fishing being pretty darn good. Fished during the middle of the day. In two hours we had 3/4 of our limit with the biggest being a 26"er, probably went 7+ lbs. If we would've stayed longer, limits were a guarantee. The condition of the river is good to very good although there is a cold front expected to move in by Friday. Don't worry though, there is still lots of good fishing left for us. Chartreuse heads with white tails were working at the tail end of a nice pool. Its great to feel the tick, tick, tick, slow pull that is a walleye sucking in your presentation. In addition to guided walleye trips we also book for "white bass specials" visit our website then call for greatly reduced rates for these fun trips. |

Now that the river level is down and there is some visibility in the river, fishing has improved dramatically. We are seeing females with eggs in them. That means that the run itself is still in the beginning stages, and the spawning will be taking place for the next two weeks. I can suggest floaters with 1/4 to 1/2 ounce egg sinker 18 inches above. Any bright color will do, but try chartreuce, pink and white in any combination. Get down there during mid week and avoid the crowds. we are down there daily, just contact via e-mail info@homeruncharters and we'd be happy to help. |

We fished yesterday and today. I can say that there are fish in the water but the real beginning stages of the run have not started yet. The fishing was slow with only a few of our friendly brown bass (carp, buffalo) being caught. I would expect this weekend to be the first true weekend with decent chances of catching your walleye. Conditions are heating up and the prospects for this weekend look decent. Water level is at 584 (too high to get to Bluegrass) and about 43 degrees. The rain we had on Thursday didn't change the already muddy water. That type of water is completely normal for this time of year. Try your same floater combos and buy them at Zaps. I suggest bright colors. another sad note : If you have any questions give me a heads up at info@homeruncharters.com |

The warm rains from the last couple of days; should start bringing the 'Jacks' upriver, through the Maumee & Perrysburg fishing areas, within the next several days. The high-water experienced during & since the ice-out on Sunday 3/16, has made the lure of choice; unpainted round-head jigs (1/2 oz. to 5/8 oz.), with mostly the darker-colors of twister-tails being used. That will probably switch to a mixture of round-heads & floating-jigs with brighter colored tails, as the water drops and the water temperature continues to climb. Best chance for 'easy' limits of Walleye, is still sometime in the near future! Look for us alongside the River at Side-Cut Park; for up-to-the-minute, accurate, fishing-information! Good Fishin'! Lake Erie Fishing Report: March 20, 2003 Fishing activity remains low on Lake Erie due to the absence of ice and cold water conditions. Some reports indicated that fisherman have been catching steelhead in the smaller tributary streams of Lake Erie; however, conditions on the traditional steelhead rivers not favorable. A few fisherman have been observed on the Maumee and Sandusky Rivers but success has been low. Water temperatures remain in the upper 30's and lower 40's. |
Maumee river conditions & update - CAUTION: ,

hello - here is what you need to know about the river. It is dangerous to even pull your waders on right now. We have lost one fisherman already over the weekend. Reports have him hanging onto a piece of ice flow near Meigs, not to be seen again. People: the river is too cold right now. The rising temperatures this week may bring good fishing if there is no rain. But: the extreemly cold winter does prep the walleye's internal systems and makes for very active spawning, healthy eggs & sperm. I would suggest trying things mid week. thank you. Lake Erie Fishing Report: February 20, 2003 Ice conditions over most of Lake Erie have degraded substantially over the past week; however, fishable conditions have been reported for the Bass Island area as well as parts of Sandusky Bay. Very little fishing activity has been observed around the Catawba State Park due to hazardous ice conditions. Fishing success around the Bass Island area remains spotty with walleye action slow and good numbers of yellow perch reported. |

Lake Erie Fishing Report: February 13, 2003 Over the past week ice conditions on the western basin of Lake Erie have changed; strong winds have increased the amount of open water on the lake. Reports indicate that there is open water from the Catawba Island/ South Bass Island area east towards Kelley's Island; however, ice conditions in and around the Bass Island area still remain satisfactory. Reports out of Toldedo indicate that the ice around the Brest Bay area, just North of Monroe Michigan, broke up due to strong winds earlier this week. Similarly, the southern lakeshore from Toledo to Sandusky should be considered treacherous. Since thin ice and snow hides old cracks, anglers should take caution when going out. Fishing success for yellow perch and walleye remains spotty. |
