I am a poor man who either has to stock up on walleye during the Maumee river run or take my chances picking up some perch from the shore. Since I don't have any freezer stock from this spring, I was wondering if there was any shore action along this path. I am willing to travel futher if needed. I'm planning an all night fishing session this Friday if the outlook is good. |

Fishing Report for the week of 5/26/02.: Port Clinton , OH

Who flipped the switch? After a very tough run the last few weeks due to the weather, things changed dramatically this past week. The weather was nice and the Walleye fishing was simply awesome. It was as if the entire western basin came to life. The drifters had a ball catching limit catches in many areas. Best areas were around the “ditch” in Toledo, around A and D can’s, N.W. of West Sister Island and in many near shore areas anywhere from Port Clinton clear to Toledo. Most all of the Walleyes are being caught right on the bottom with bottom bouncer rigs and nightcrawlers. The trollers have been limiting out easily in the flats just north of the reefs. The best area by far is the deep water between C and B cans. We finished our last three trips Fri., Sat., and Sun. at the western basin by trolling and limited out easily with nice Walleyes. On Friday we had a huge Walleye that measured 32” and was built like a barrel! I’m guessing the fish went around 12 pounds. All of these fish were caught deep as well. We were running #20 Jet Divers, 160 ft. back with Stinger Spoons. As I write this report, “The Trophy” is back home in her port of Ashtabula, OH. We ran the boat back on Sunday afternoon after our charter on a beautiful, flat lake. We even went out for a couple hours on Monday and caught 3 big Walleyes just N.W. of the harbor. This is a great sign and things should take off as always. Once again, I really enjoyed doing these Spring fishing reports. I just get too busy to keep it up the rest of the summer. I hope to do them again next year. Capt. Walt

Not much change. It was yet another very tough week weather wise here in the Western basin. We had high winds, tons of rain and record low temperatures. The water temperature off of Toledo Harbor is still stuck at 51º. That and the fact that the water clarity is very dirty has made for slow fishing again this past week. Last year I couldn’t say enough about how great the fishing was. Last spring was the best I had experienced in my past 20 years on Lake Erie. This year is just the opposite and I know that it is all weather related. Until this weather pattern changes, I don’t see much change in fishing conditions. As dismal as things are, here is what I was aware of this past week. There has been a little "bite" around A can out by West Sister Island and N.W. of the island. These fish are smaller and are being taken on bottom bouncers and crawler harnesses. Gold blades have been the best. A lot of captains have given up on the Walleye fishing for the time being and have switched off to Perch fishing. Best action has been just east of Ballast Island. Lots of smaller Perch. Some Smallmouth Bass have been taken around all of the Bass Islands. We’re down to our last week here in the Western basin. For the most part it has been very disappointing. Next weekend we leave for Ashtabula. It will be good to be home no matter what awaits us!

I am planning a vacation to Marblehead the first week in July. I have never fished Lake Erie for walleye before. Can anyone clue me in as to how to fish for them, and some possible places to find them in early July, providing the weather is seasonalbe and conditons are somewhat normal. I would also like to fish for perch if anyone has any suggestions. |

Going nowhere fast. That’s the best way to describe this year’s water temperature here at the western basin. The temperature off of Toledo Harbor has been stuck at 51º for about a month now. I’ve never seen anything like it. The cold, rainy, and very windy spring has stalled everything, including this year’s spring Walleye bite. Except for about a 10-day stretch in April during the peak of the spawning period, the Walleye fishing has been tough. This past week was the same story. Very high winds and gales blew Monday, Wednesday, Thursday and Friday. Tuesday and most of the day on Saturday were descent so we elected to troll on "The Trophy". We did get eight Walleyes both days. Saturday’s fish were a nice size and we did have one on Tuesday that went around 8 or 9 pounds. All of the fish were caught on Stinger spoons fished behind Jet Divers about 100 ft. back. We were fishing way north trying to find clean water. Best action was about 3 miles west of North Bass Island. The water was still very murky. The marks on the fishfinder are just incredible. I just know if we ever get three days in a row, this area is going to explode. If it doesn’t happen soon, a lot of the fish will begin to migrate east and this won’t help matters for folks that only fish the western basin. |

Still slow. The wind the last two weeks just has not let up. Almost everyday gale winds have ripped the western basin into a muddy mess. This past weekend the winds eased and air temps. finally returned to normal. The damage however from all of the wind was evident in everyone’s fish boxes. Most boats struggled to catch a Walleye or two. We managed to box 10 on Wednesday fishing on Niagara Reef. Thursday and Friday most boats stayed in safe harbor as winds picked up again. Saturday was very tough but we managed to save the day by catching a nice mess of Smallmouths on Flat Rock Reef jigging Heddon Sonars. The Fire Tiger color worked the best in the muddy water. The trollers are still struggling. The fish are stacked heavy around the islands but they are still turned off. The weather sounds better for this coming week with warmer temps. hanging around but the weatherman is already using the "breezy” word so I am already concerned. I plan on breaking into the nightcrawlers seriously this week and do some trolling if it’s not too windy. Things should really start to happen if the water clears up some. Water temps. have gone nowhere; hanging in at about 51º. |

Tough! That’s the best way to describe this past week’s weather and fishing. Gale force or near gale force winds blew last Saturday, Sunday, Monday, Thursday and again this Saturday and Sunday. We got a couple days in but the very dirty water has really slowed things down. We did best jigging blade baits on the sloping drop offs surrounding Niagara Reef. We had 8 fish one day and 13 the next. I was surprised to get any on the blades because the last few times we hit the reefs, it appeared that this type of fishing was all but over. Here’s the scoop on what everyone else did this week. Trolling went from as good as it gets to nothing. Most trollers, even the better charters were either getting just flat skunked or maybe a fish. Lots of marks on the graph but these fish have totally turned off. There was a little "bite" on the slopes surrounding Crib Reef. A couple of the charters got in the "teens" using jigs tipped with a piece of night crawler. I heard of a few fish caught on bottom bouncers and night crawlers also this week. We tried it but didn’t catch anything. There was a little action way west by Toledo, west of the "ditch". Boats limited out the couple days that you could fish but these Walleyes were very, very small. I guess they were using jigs tipped with either a minnow or worm. As I am writing this Sunday night, the wind is still howling and the water is muddy as far as you can see. Not good. The water temperature off of Toledo Harbor is 51º. |

Anglers are taking an occasional walleye (16"-22") using 1/8-1/4 oz. jigs, chartreuse, florescent orange, and pink. Best area is from Fort Meigs upstream through 4-75 bridge. Anglers are also taking fair numbers of white bass using shiners below bobbers.

Wow! That’s the only way to describe this past weeks fishing. Record warm temperatures jumped the water temperature into the Fifties and the big post spawn female Walleyes turned on as if it were August. We trolled aboard “The Trophy” for the first time on Tuesday and limited the boat out for 5 guys with fish ranging from 25 to 31 inches! We fished #20 Jet Divers on Rip Cord 40 ft. back with short-lipped wobbling type minnow lures. Awesome! Most of the fish were in the 28 to 29 inch class. The In – Fisherman Professional Walleye Trail Tournament was held also this past week: the 17th, 18th and 19th. It was a record-smashing event. Tommy Skarlis of Walker, MN won first place with a total weight of 138.28 pounds for 15 fish for the three days. (5 fish per day weighed) Here are some quick unbelievable stats: · 1,494 Walleyes were caught for a total tournament weight of 14,180.68 pounds. Many other records were smashed for this three-day tournament held here in Port Clinton. All of these fish were taken trolling in the “flats” mostly north of the reefs. If you want monster Walleyes, you just have to troll. We’ll be doing a lot more of that as the water continues to warm. The warmer water really shortened the spawning time and most of the Walleyes are done and off the reefs now. A strong cold front this weekend pretty much shut everything down. We’ll see how long it takes for things to rebound. |

Western Basin: The spring walleye season is well underway on Western Basin Lake Erie with a good number of hardy private boat and charter boat anglers in pursuit of Erie eyes. Anglers have been vertical jigging on Maumee Bay and Sandusky Bay (including the railroad bridge), all across Western Basin reef areas, and off Catawba and Marblehead. Some limit catches have been reported. Most fish are 3-year-olds in the 16- to 18-inch range. Anglers in this early spring walleye fishery typically use a vertical jigging fishing method using leadhead jigs and ice-fishing lures tipped with minnows. The legal bag limit for walleyes for Lake Erie and its tributaries is four per angler per day during March and April. A new fishing license for the 2002/2003 fishing season was required as of March 1. The spring perch action is also underway with catches of nice-size yellow |

Large numbers of walleye, both males and females, are being taken (18"-26") with some bigger fish (30"). Many limits are being seen. The best locations are between Conant Street Bridge and Orleans Park. Anglers are using chartreuse, green, and orange jigs. Outlook is excellent and should get even better with warmer weather. Sandusky River - 44 Degrees, water is high. Anglers are catching large numbers of both male and female walleye. Anglers are using florescent orange jigs. The outlook is excellent for the week and should get even better with warm weather. |

We’re back! The boat went in the water this year on March 28th. And what a cruel joke Mother Nature has played on all of us. After a winter of mostly 50, 60 and even 70-degree temperatures, the last three weeks have seen below normal temperatures and more snow than we’ve seen all winter! We actually had to cut through ice to get our boat into its slip on the 28th. The water here in the Western Basin has been muddy and cold, making for some slow fishing that first weekend. This past weekend was nothing to write home about although we caught fish every trip out. Thursday, April 4th was the exception and we actually had our first good day aboard “The Trophy”. We had a total of six aboard and we limited the boat out fishing on the Toussaint Reef with blade baits. Other action that I heard about was either Cedar Point Beach by Toledo, OH (not the amusement park) in eight ft. of water with jigs and minnows and under the railroad bridge in Sandusky Bay. Water temps. when we put the boat in were around 37° but now are up to 41°. |

I normally fish for Walleye using a floating jighead rigged about 20-24" below my sinker. I let the rig bounce along the bottom of the river, as normal. I seem to have difficulty hooking the fish hard and eventually loose them part way in. I don't feel them tugging very much when one gets on. Any suggestions? |
