Winter weather has hit the Erie area in a big way. Heavy snowfalls will
result in high stream levels and good fishing if temperatures stay around the
freezing mark and do not drop low enough to freeze everything up. The creeks
are up and the pools are high and dark green. This is often the best
conditions of the season and those hearty enough to brave the cold can enjoy
some great fishing.

High water levels should have fish moving throughout the creeks. A sudden
rise in temperature and a quick snow melt can wash the creeks out
quickly...use caution as the weather warms.

With the onset of possible ice in the streams, extreme caution should be
taken when wading. Stream bottoms and bank edges can be extremely slippery
and the water very cold. Its a good idea to fish with someone or near other
anglers in case of an accident.

Perch action has been very good off of Dobbins landing and the public fishing
areas near the Cherry Street marina along the Bayfront Parkway.

Fish will begin to be less active. Minnows are good this time of year as
are single eggs. Midges, wooly buggers, sucker spawn, and egg patterns can
do the trick for the fly anglers.

The Trout Run Marina will remain open for awhile providing good fishing and
shelter from the winter winds. The Marina is providing good catches of fish
and with the colder weather, crowds will diminish.

Handicapped access to the end of the South Pier along the Erie Channel has
been generously provided by the Sons of Lake Erie. The entire length of the
pier is now fully wheelchair accessible to our disabled anglers.

Stream fishermen in remote wooded areas should have some piece of blaze
orange visible during the upcoming deer season

Good luck, keep warm, and have a safe Holiday,
