We left Walnut Creek on saturday sept.9 with two brand new batteries, on board. I bought them at advance auto parts. The guy behind the counter said just hook them up go. We had a cooler full of perch by 11:00am and decided to head in. I turned the key and nothing happened. We popped the caps off the batteries and found only a small amount of water in each battery. My loran kept going on and off due to the lack of power. The wind picked up so we dropped the anchor. You could not see shore because of the mist, but i did have a pretty good compass heading before this all happened 150 degrees SE should take me back to walnut. With a small piece of wire a made jumpers to hook the batteries together and was able to get my ship to shore fired up. I was pretty sure we were about 5 miles NW of walnut, I called for help and within seconds lake shore towing was calling back. I gave him my last loran position and he headed out to find us. A few minutes later Two conservation officers came along side and helped out by calling in a more accurate position. Within an hour we were under way with a good fix on walnut. I want to thank everyone who helped us that day. I should of looked at the water level before heading out. Lake Erie can bite you and bite you hard. On the way back to conneaut lake that day my muffler fell off my truck, and later in the afternoon while headind back to pittsburgh my water pump went. Total cost for the day $120.00 for the jump start on the lake, $60.00 for the muffler and $150.00 for the flatbed ride to pittsburgh. By the way the name of my boat is B"EYE"T ME and it did that day. Thank You Everyone!!!! |
