Erie WCO Weekly Report - 12/5/01 by WCO John Bowser & DWCO Randy LeightonSteelhead ... The fish are basically everywhere with fresh ones appearing all the time. High water has them up to I-79 on Elk Creek & probably the Millcreek Mall on Walnut. Crooked, Raccoon, and all of the East side tribs are reporting good numbers of large fish. While concentrations are still at the lower ends of the tribs, many great places are available upstream away from the crowds. Next trip to Erie ... take the time to explore some new spots. Crappies... The Crappie fishing in Marina Lake on Presque Isle is still pretty good in the early morning but seems to slow very quickly as the sun gets higher. Steelhead are showing up in this area as well. Yellow Perch... The North Pier, the Public Dock, and the foot of Liberty Street have been the hotspots. Early morning is the time to be fishing. The public Dock is giving up the largest fish of the three spots. Happy Holidays... Erie County Officers want to wish everyone the happiest of Holidays. Many of you have made our job easier & much more efficient with violation reporting. This enables anglers & the resource to receive a higher level of service for the license dollar. Sportsmen are asked to be especially watchful as December has historically been the month that most "large scale" poaching incidents occur. Many of these violators are not the nicest people to deal with and caution is advised. Report any suspicious activity along with as much information that can be safely obtained. WCO Bowser can be called at home or cell phone at 814-774-0928 (hm) or 814-881-5657 (cell) at any time. Crawford County Report WCO Joe Russell
Pymatuning Lake-The pressure has been light this week maybe because of the weather and possibly because of deer season but for those who have ventured out it has been productive, for Walleye. I talked to one fishermen from Linesville who told me he limited out three nights in a row on the North end of the lake fishing the Ohio side so he decided to try the Red Cross area. The water temp continues to be 48-50 degrees and all the recent rain we had only raised the lake level 6" so it looks like it will be a while before safe ice. Conneaut Lake-In the last week I have only observed 1 boat fishing here and he was in the middle of the lake in a rain storm so I have no idea how he did but this lake continues to be underfished. Shenago River Headwaters-(Outflow to Pymatuning) A very large 50 Inch Musky was taken from the outflow this week by one lucky fisherman and he is right now having it mounted. This area is still being fished by quite a few people and is a nice area to fish for young ones, just remember that the stones around the handicap platform near the dam are off limits because of the dangerous undercurrent.
