WESTERN ERIE COUNTY WCO JOHN W. BOWSER & DWCO RANDY LEIGHTON Yellow Perch… Continue to be the big story. The school is currently in 48' of water off of Trout Run. These are running an 11" to 12" average with limits being caught in 90 minutes. Another school is off of Seagull Point but reports indicate the sizes are a lot smaller. Walleye… Have been elusive from day to day. One day will have limits coming in and the next day they will be gone with only a few per boat. Just when you think that you have them figured out using the purple & black worm harnesses, the only boat that comes in with fish used plugs off of the planer boards. Current lake water temperature is over 78 degrees and it seems the best method changes from day to day. The "Triangle" is still the best reported spot though success stories has been observed in 68' of water northeast out of Walnut and in 40' of water due east between the access & the Peninsula. Boat Accidents… A number of serious boat accidents have been keeping officers busy. While these are life altering incidents for both the victims and their families, they should serve as lessons that we can learn by. Boating is one of the most enjoyable outdoor pastimes but only if it can be done without injury or property damage. 1. Check your safety equipment and make sure that everyone knows where it is & how to use it. 2. Use caution and slow speed when operating in periods of reduced visibility. Boats quickly disappear when there is a background of city lights. 3. Do not do anything on a Personal Watercraft that you would not do in a 27' boat. The rules of operation are the same. 4. Make certain that the operator of the boat is experienced, familiar with the area waters and SOBER. 5. Use extreme caution if flammable materials must be handled in a boat. 6. Be aware of the low water conditions on the lake and realize that underwater obstacles may be present that has never posed a threat before. 7. Checks lights prior to sunset and don't be afraid to display them earlier than required by law. We Love Erie Days Fireworks are this coming Sunday. Patrol Boats will be setting up a safety perimeter around Dobbin's Landing and the East Slip. Please use caution and slow speed at the end of the show. There will be many anchor lines out and zero tolerance for Boating Under the Influence. Enjoy but be safe. Power Loading at the Ramp… Officers have observed several "near misses" of injuries at the launching ramps from the practice of power loading of boats onto trailers. No one likes to crank a boat up by winch but remember that you are civilly responsible for damage caused by your prop wash just like your wake. Boats (and especially the larger ones 25'+) were causing boats to bounce off the ramps and strain against boat lines being held by wives awaiting the arrival of the trailer. Fingers were pinched between the dock and their boat etc… Back the trailers farther into the water if necessary and just use light power until alignment is achieved. Hats Off... Special thanks goes out to Marilyn & Bev of the Walnut Creek Marina Staff for their help to officers & victims this past Monday involved in the boat fire incident. Their professionalism secured medical responders, maintained critical communications, gathered pertinent medical histories, handled media inquiries, and probably a dozen other tasks in a faced paced critical situation. Their coolness under pressure is a credit to the PFBC and was a blessing for the officers. Great job EASTERN ERIE COUNTY REPORT WCO MARK KERR Fishing out of North East Marina has been good. Walleyes are being taken from 115' of water. Yellow Perch are being caught in 42' water depth. Lake Trout & Steelhead are coming out of 155' areas of the lake. Rental Boats are available at the marina for those wishing to try their luck for the "Big One" WESTERN CRAWFORD COUNTY REPORT WCO JOE RUSSELL I apologize to all the sportsmen who wait regularly for our report to come out every week. Due to a near fatal boat accident on Conneaut Lake last week, I was a little tied up. In the last week we have had two serious boat accidents and a BUI (Boating Under the Influence) all in western Crawford County. All of these could have been prevented with some care. The only fish I have seen caught in either Pymatuning Lake or Conneaut Lake has been CARP. The water in both lakes has been above 80 degrees, great for swimming but bad for fishing. Although two of the carp fishermen that I did talk to had approximately 150 pounds of carp in one evening. Unfortunately they were fishing behind the wire at the spillway and thanks to some concerned citizens that called with the license plate and were willing to testify they are both paying $211.50 for a cooler full of turtle bait. Boaters need to remember also that BUI is a serious infraction of the law as well, it is a Misdemeanor and can have some serious ramifications. If you have to drink while boating get a designated driver like you would a car, then everyone is safe. Everyone needs to remember that we are not out there to ruin your fun time we are out there so that you make it back home to boat another day. Hopefully the weather will start cooling off and the fall walleye run will start picking up. Until next week stay safe and enjoy the waters of Pa.
