Wow! That’s the only way to describe this past weeks fishing. Record warm temperatures jumped the water temperature into the Fifties and the big post spawn female Walleyes turned on as if it were August. We trolled aboard “The Trophy” for the first time on Tuesday and limited the boat out for 5 guys with fish ranging from 25 to 31 inches! We fished #20 Jet Divers on Rip Cord 40 ft. back with short-lipped wobbling type minnow lures. Awesome! Most of the fish were in the 28 to 29 inch class. The In – Fisherman Professional Walleye Trail Tournament was held also this past week: the 17th, 18th and 19th. It was a record-smashing event. Tommy Skarlis of Walker, MN won first place with a total weight of 138.28 pounds for 15 fish for the three days. (5 fish per day weighed) Here are some quick unbelievable stats:

· 1,494 Walleyes were caught for a total tournament weight of 14,180.68 pounds.
· 346 Walleyes were over 10 pounds.
· The biggest was 14.27 pounds!
· The best one-day weight for 5 fish was 53.20 pounds.

Many other records were smashed for this three-day tournament held here in Port Clinton. All of these fish were taken trolling in the “flats” mostly north of the reefs. If you want monster Walleyes, you just have to troll. We’ll be doing a lot more of that as the water continues to warm. The warmer water really shortened the spawning time and most of the Walleyes are done and off the reefs now. A strong cold front this weekend pretty much shut everything down. We’ll see how long it takes for things to rebound.
