Lake Erie Fishing Report: February 13, 2003

Over the past week ice conditions on the western basin of Lake Erie have
changed; strong winds have increased the amount of open water on the lake.
Reports indicate that there is open water from the Catawba Island/ South
Bass Island area east towards Kelley's Island; however, ice conditions in
and around the Bass Island area still remain satisfactory. Reports out of
Toldedo indicate that the ice around the Brest Bay area, just North of
Monroe Michigan, broke up due to strong winds earlier this week. Similarly,
the southern lakeshore from Toledo to Sandusky should be considered
treacherous. Since thin ice and snow hides old cracks, anglers should take
caution when going out. Fishing success for yellow perch and walleye
remains spotty.

Reports from the Grand River area indicate that anglers are fishing for
steelhead and smelt through the ice at local marinas. Anglers are also
fishing for steelhead at the Eastlake CEI seawall near Cleveland, OH;
however, icy conditions on the seawall exist and anglers should exercise
extreme caution while fishing.
