FISH FOR FREE THIS WEEKEND

LANSING--Looking for something fun to do this weekend? Go
fishing. It's free. Michigan's annual Winter Free Fishing
Weekend takes place this Saturday and Sunday, February 17-
18, when all fishing license fees will be waived on these
two days for residents and visitors on all Michigan waters,
though other fishing regulations still apply.
The purpose of this winter celebration, now in its second
year, is to highlight Michigan's four seasons of great
recreational fishing and to encourage people to get outside
and enjoy the wide variety of terrific outdoor winter
recreation Michigan has to offer.
Winter Free Fishing Weekend also precedes the annual
observance of the President's Day holiday, which enables
many families and individuals to enjoy three full days of
fishing fun. However, persons age 17 or older who plan to
fish on Monday, February 20, must have a valid fishing
license.
In conjunction with Winter Free Fishing Weekend, the Bay
City State Recreation Area is holding its annual Winter
Festival, Saturday, February 17, at the Saginaw Bay Visitor
Center. An ice fishing derby, snow sculpting competition,
bluebird nestbox clinic and an ice safety presentation by
the U.S. Coast Guard top the list of activities, which also
includes a chili dinner. For more information, contact the
Saginaw Bay Visitor Center at 517-667-0717. A state park
motor vehicle permit is required for park entry.
If you go fishing this weekend, remember to exercise
particular caution. It's a good idea to call ahead to bait
and tackle shops or other local sources to check current ice
or stream conditions in the area you plan to fish. And
taking someone along who is experienced at fishing this time
of year is highly recommended, especially if you have never
fished in the winter before.
