WATERFOWL FESTIVAL WINGING ITS WAY TO POINTE MOUILLEE LANSING--Duck hunters and waterfowl enthusiasts from across the United States and Canada will flock to the Pointe Mouillee State Game Area on the west shore of Lake Erie south of Detroit for the 53rd annual Michigan Duck Hunters' Tournament and Waterfowl Festival September 9 and 10 in Brownstown. The weekend festival, one of the largest events of its kind, includes dog retriever events, river contests, duck and goose calling and the Annual Midwest Decoy Contest held on Sunday afternoon. An Outdoor Trading Post gives people the opportunity to purchase hunting and fishing equipment, antique decoys, books and sporting collectibles. A variety of wildlife paintings and prints, carvings, photographs and taxidermy mounts also are available. People interested in owning a hunting dog can choose from several breeds of puppies ready for adoption. The festival, open 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. both days, is operated by the Michigan Duck Hunters' Tournament, Inc. in conjunction with the Michigan Department of Natural Resources. Although entry to the event is free, all proceeds at the event support the restoration of wetlands at Pointe Mouillee and other outdoor education efforts in the area.
